  1. The flag of Guatemala is designed in two colours: sky blue and white.

The white stripe between the two sky blue stripes represents the fact that Guatemala is a land located between two oceans, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The white colour also signifies peace and purity.

  2. The flag is not inspired in the argentina one... the fact that all the other central american countries have horizontal stripes is the fact that the atlantic and the pacific ocean are above and below of this countries... So many years ago, when Belice was part of Guatemala, the oceans "seemed" to be located east-west...

    The colors represents:

White: The peace, the purify and the freedom (The clouds and with the blue color the color of the sky...)

Blue: The 2 oceans and the sky where the Quetzal flies...

The flag of Guatemala is designed in two colours: sky blue and white. The white stripe between the two sky blue stripes represents the fact that Guatemala is a land located between two oceans, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The white colour also signifies peace and purity.

The stripe pattern is based on the national flag of United Provinces of Central America, although there the stripes were horizontal and the two outer stripes were blue, rather than sky blue. The flags of the other countries that were part of the United Provinces of Central America follow the horizontal, blue pattern. Inspired in the Argentine flag.

In the center of the flag is the Guatemalan coat of arms. It includes the Resplendent Quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala that symbolizes liberty; a parchment scroll bearing the date of Central America's independence from Spain, 15 September 1821; crossed rifles, indicating Guatemala's willingness to defend itself by force if need be; a bay laurel crown, the symbol for victory; and crossed swords, representing honor.

    About history:

    A. Decree of 12 August 1871 (signed by Provisory President Miguel Garcia Granados):

    1. The national colours shall be blue and white in three vertical stripes, with the white stripe in the middle.

    2. The national ensign shall include in the white stripe the shield of arms of the Republic.

    3. The civil ensign shall be the same, but without the shield.

    4. The cockade shall have the same colours in the same pattern.

    B. Decree of 18 November 1871 (signed by President Miguel Garcia Granados):

The arms of the Republic shall be:

A shield with two rifles and two golden swords tied with laurel branches, on a light blue field. The center shall be masked by a parchment, on which golden letters shall read "Libertad 15 de Septiembre de 1821". Above, there shall be a Quetzal (Pharomacrus Mocinno) as the symbol of Independence and autonomy of the Nation.
