  1. Here are a few links that may be helpful for you.

The first link is the main page for US Citizens who plan to reside in Guatemala:

This second link is the January 2006 Residency Requirements page

As for where to live, the city is where the jobs are, but it is also very dangerous.  Zones 10, 13, 14, and 15 are a little safer than others.  Living outside Guatemala can be wonderful, but finding employment is extremely difficult.  Most Americans live in Panajachel or the area around Puerto Barrios/Rio Dulce.

I hope this helps you in your search.

  2. then welcome to Guatemala

It depends on what kind of life do you want to have.  There are a lot of foreigners living in Antigua Guatemala and Panajachel (2 beautiful cities).  But if you want to live in Guatemala City, the rent would depend on the zone you choose for living: zone 9 and 10 is a commercial zone, so I do not suggest that you choose those, zone 13-14-15 are good zones but expensive.   If I were you, I would choose Antigua Guatemala or San Lucas Sacatepequez.

Type of visa, well you can ask for an extended time to stay here, and you can make renewals to your permit.  I am not completely sure, but after 2 or 3 years of living here, you can ask for residence.

Good luck and again welcome to the Eternal Spring Country.
