  1. El Duende is real famous in Guatemala is also called El Sombreron, this is a legend from acient times and a Guatemalan tipical legend. El Sombrerón always dresses in black and chooses the priettiest girls in towno. In case he sees them and reaches to touch them, the girls get enchated by him.

In Guatemala they have many other legends such as El Cadejo, La llorona and many others. All with spaniard taste of old times as in al Central American coutries.

  2. "El Sombreron" is a very popular legend, and I think that you're story of "El duende" is not related to the original story... Here is the true story of  "El duende":

It’s a spook that walks with the turned around feet emitting a frightful whine. It’s dedicated to annoy the families of the farmers until it drives them crazy and forces them to emigrate towards the cities.

The duende usually moves things of its place or hides them. It lives in caves, where it hides children to drive them crazy.

At night, the duende throws stones to the roofs of the houses, or chases girls that are old enough to have a boyfriend, is also does braids to horses and plays the guitar. In fact, one way of scaring him away is placing a guitar at midnight so that it doesn’t bother the family.

The legend also says that the duende is an angel expelled from heaven due to his envy towards God, and therefore was condemned to wander by the fields scaring people.

  3. Mmmmmm that is an oral tradition in Guatemala which is transferred from generation to generation.

Most of these oral traditions are since the time of the Spanish Conquer.

If I am OK the "duende" is called also "sombreron".   A small man dressed in black like a little cowboy but with a very big hat.   He gets in love with teenage girls with long hair and he comes to their window riding a horse and he gives a "serenata" singing with his guitar to the girls.

He comes night by night to the window of his beloved girls and when they sleep, he makes some special mark on the hair of the girls twisting their hairs.

The girls get in love with the "duende" and they ran away with him and no one knows what happen to them after that.
