It is not a 2001-2004 because the steering wheel is different.

its definitly a E46 - previous generation 3 series. whether its a real M3 is a different question. Its got lots of customisation, like a different gear gaiter, chrome rings around the instrumental cluster etc... My personal opinion is that it's a 3 series with a revamped/customised interior to look like a M3.

it looks very similar to our e36 325 ci

It's a 2003.5 - 2006 M3 convertible with SMG transmission. Nothing custom about the interior or dash, this is how they all look. All SMGs have the dual color wheel, with the paddles. In mid 2003 they changed the A/C controller to the one you see. The extra button near the power window buttons indicates it's a convertible. He also has navigation. I say he because there is a man's wallet in the center console slide open compartment. In the US, this is where the cup holders are. I removed mine and installed the slide open compartment also. This is not an M3 CSL, they don't have cruise control or any of the other buttons on the wheel except for one.
