I have ADHD, and the college I attend is refusing to modify my work, but only offer me a tutor during after class sessions. Is there some type of American Disability Act they have to follow to insure my work is modified to my extent to learning?

  1. play smart w/rose are and you dan do anything!!!

  2. yes they need to work with u you need to be registered in their disabilities record keeping and let teh director and ur professors know that u work best on modified work. u need to get writing and express ur desire to persue education but you ned it to be a certain way, they need to provide you with an acceptible format for your disability, speak to the coordinator of special services and tell them ur issue, if it doesnt work speak to your dean and ask them

  3. In order to get modified work, you must have had an evaluation by a qualified professional during the past 3 years proving that you have that diagnosis. That would be someone like an educational psychologist or neuropsychologist and a medical doctor.

Your best bet would be to ask your college's disability office what specific documentation you need to obtain the services you need.

Even with documentation, you may still only be allowed the accommodation they recommend...in this case, a tutor.

I understand how frustrating this must be for you. I work with students with your diagnosis and have a daughter with another type of disability who has to advocate for herself at college.

Colleges have had to really tighten up on who qualifies, because unfortunately there are a lot of students (and their parents) who think kids with ADHD and other disabilities are getting breaks at the expense of their kids and therefore better classes and grades. They doctor shop until they get a written diagnosis and then try to pass their kids off as disabled when they're not.

The ADA does not pertain to your situation. My advice would be to try and work with your disability office. Take advantage of the tutor. Tape record your lectures so you can listen to them when you need to, in case you missed something. Use highlight tape for key vocabulary and info in your textbooks. Outline your chapters, etc. Most people with your diagnosis do just fine in college. I'm sure you will too.

  4. The college's that you are looking at going to I would contact them and ask them what their policy is for ADHD students. At Southwestern Michigan College they have programs set up to address this or any other type of disability the students may have. I would start with the school and write down the questions I wanted answered and make sure you understand them. SMC also allows students to take their test at the testing center for a quieter setting. Good Luck
