Guido Pella defeated Brian Dabul in 1st round - Ciudad de Guayaquil CH 2011
Argentinean qualifier Guido Pella trampled unseeded compatriot Brian Dabul in the first round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
At the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador the two players battled against each other on outdoor classic clay courts. After a one hour and forty six minutes the Argentinean battled past unseeded compatriot by surviving a mid match fall to score a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 on Monday the 21st of November 2011.
Pella commenced the first round of the match as he had won the service pitch and he expertly held his serve to kick open the score board at 1-0. However, in the following two games the players broke each other back-to-back to progress the score to 2-1 at the end of the third game.
As the two challengers then matched a blow for a blow the score progressed on even terms with each player holding his respective serve and at the end of the eighth game the score had shifted to 5-3 with Pella leading. However, he was unable to close the set in the next game but eventually managed to so in the tenth game.
The second set was commenced by Dabul and both the players held their respective serves in the following two games. As the two once more bagged a service game each, the score tied at two games each by the end of the fourth game.
Subsequently, in the next two games the players bartered in breaks and the score once more balanced out at three games each by the end of the sixth game. However, this time it was Dabul, who took on his A-game and clogged the second set by utilizing the serve-break-serve method.
At the end of the first two sets, each player had bagged a set each and inaugurating the decisive set was once again Pella. This time he smashed a backhand winner to clog the opening game. Following behind was Dabul and he too held his service game.
However, with a hold of serve in the third game and by capitalizing on a breakpoint in the fourth, Pella tactfully reeled off two successive games to take a mini lead of 3-1. This time Pella cut the goose chase and repeated the feat, in doing so; he was only a game away from victory. As he held his serve for the last time, he smashed a stunning forehand winner down the line to bag the set with a breadstick victory.
Next up for the Argentinean qualifier is either Columbian Eduardo Struvay or seventh seeded Italian Alessandro Giannessi in the second round of the tournament.
