Guido Pella defeats Gustavo Sterin in first round qualifier – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
The first round of the men’s qualifying singles at the 2011 Uruguay Open began from November 12, 2011. Guido Pella (Argentina) took on compatriot Gustavo Sterin. The 21-year old Pella won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Both players, equally matched in style and approach tried to dominate each other in the early goings of the match. The two players were not able to score any ace in the first set. They were playing very cautiously, which is why
they did not concede any double fault either.
It is also interesting to note that both competitors had a hundred percent first serve winning ratio. Pella won 62% points from his first serve and Sterin won 46% points. In the second serve, neither one of them could win any points.
Pella did not play his service games well for he could not win the only breakpoint that he had faced in the first set. Sterin could win only two breakpoints from the five that he faced.
Both players did play a focused run by not giving their opponents any points, but they did not play their service games well. Sterin could only win three games in the first set. Pella won the first set 6-3.
As the second set progressed, the same attentive playing style was seen as the players did not show any aggression. In the second set, they did not deliver any ace, which again was an indication that they were not in the mood to
play any offensive tennis.
The double faults in the second set were again none as the two Argentinean players were not giving any room for any extra points to be given to their opponents.
Just like the players had a first serve winning ratio of hundred percent, they were able to secure the same percentage in the second set as well.
Pella had an upper hand as he won 65% points from his first serve. Sterin was not behind as he won 54% points from his first serve.
The players were again unsuccessful in scoring any points from their second serve. Pella, ranked at 481st position in the world, was successful in saving the only breakpoint whish he faced.
On the other hand, Sterin, ranked at world number 767th place, could only save three out of his five breakpoints.
25-year old Sterin could not manage to secure any lead, something he was unable to do in the first set. Sterin could only win two games in the second set as Pella kept his lead growing and took a decisive lead.
Pella won the second set 6-2 and cruised into the next round of the men’s qualifying stage of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
