Guido Pella gives the boot to Pavol Cervenak in quarterfinal – Ciudad de Guayaquil CH 2011
Argentinean qualifier Guido Pella expels Slovakian Pavol Cervenak in the quarterfinal of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
At the clay courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador both the old-fangled players entered into clash on Thursday the 24th of November 2011. After one hour and fifty five minutes, the Argentinean qualifier banished the Slovakian Cervenak by flogging him in straight sets of 7-6(3) 6-4.
Opting to serve first after winning the toss was Cervenak and he got to a great start as he not only held his service game to kick open the scoreboard at 1-0 but also benefitted from a breakpoint in the second game. He took the lead on the scoreboard by the end of the third game as he had reeled off three games to love.
Nonetheless, it was in the fourth game that Pella made a return with a hold of serve and in the following three games the players bagged their respective serves. The score had shifted to 5-2 at the end of the seventh game with Cervenak leading the game. It was not a lucky day for Cervenak as he was unable to close out the set in the remaining game.
On the contrary, Pella utilized the serve-break-serve method to not only mitigate the deficit but also to tie the score at five games each at the end of the tenth game. There was pin drop silence and the crowd was glued to their seats in this thrilling match.
The match at this point could’ve titled either way but as neither of the two were ready to throw in the towel, both had bagged their respective service games in the next two games and the score finally tied at six games each during the twelfth game, pushing the set into a tiebreaker.
First to take the lead on the tiebreaker was Pella and though Cervenak made a return and tied the game at three points each. From there onwards Pella rushed past his adversary towards the finish line and as he clinched the tiebreaker, he took the competitive edge in the match.
Amidst the second round both the players bagged their respective first service games to place themselves on the scoreboard at 1-1. Subsequently, in the following two games the challengers broke each other one after the other and the score tied at two games each at the end of fourth game.
Mustering further, the players then once again locked into a goose chase, as they matched a blow for a blow the score progressed on even terms and the last time the score tied was at four games each at the end of the eighth game. Pella’s forehead was perspiring as he held his service game in the ninth game and as he capitalized on the desired break in the tenth game, he sealed his victory of the match.
Next up for Pella is fourth seeded Espanola Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the semi final of the event.
