Guido Pella sweeps away Eduardo Struvay in 2nd round – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Argentinean qualifier Guido Pella recoiled from a set down to get rid of Columbian Eduardo Struvay in the second round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
The two old fangled rivals locked into a face off against each other on clay courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011. After a quick one hour and twenty eight minutes the Argentinean qualifier swept away Columbian Stuvay by jumping back from a set down to score 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Pella served first and nosedived in his first service game to gift away the opening set to his adversary. Struvay capitalized on an early break and then with a hold of serve took the mini lead on the scoreboard. The players then bagged their respective service games for the next six games and the score had progressed to 5-3 at the end of the eighth game with Struvay leading the set. As he capitalized on the second breakpoint, he clogged the opening set with a 6-3 victory.
However, in the second set Pella had realized his mistake and took a notch higher in his service game along with his return game. Moreover, he capitalized on three breakpoints to reel six out of the seven games played during the entire second set. With excellent ground strokes and a drop shots Pella managed to squander off with almost twice as many points as his adversary and sealed a breadstick victory of the second set.
As each player had bagged a set each by the end of the first two sets, the match was shoved into the third set. Kicking off the decisive set was Pella and this time he bagged an easy opening game as he smashed a few forehand winners and did not have to face a lot of opposition.
He then reeled two successive games by capitalizing on a breakpoint and then by holding his serve in the third game to take a mini lead of three games to love. It was in the fourth game that Struvay made a comeback in the fourth game with a hold of serve.
In the following two games the players bagged a service game each and the score had shifted to 4-2 at the end of the sixth game. During the seventh game Pella smashed a stunning crosscourt shot to bag a game and he then benefitted from a breakpoint to seal his victory of the set and the match.
Next up for Pella is Slovakian Pavol Cervenak in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
