Guild wars expansion question?

if i bought one of the guild wars expansion's would i half to buy the regular guild wars game i am asking this because on guild wars website it say's i should get a access card inside my expansion's box and i can enter that number to get the clint is that how it work's? because i am not sure

but if you want all thing in the game like skills or nex char or a sin witch is in faction a derv is in nightfall and new heros and all that stuff or all heros you neeed to buy all stand alone games witch are guildwars prophies,faction,eotn, and nightfall.
