Guillaume Desbiens re-signs with Vancouver Canucks; aims to play more often for them
Canadian professional ice hockey player, Guillaume Desbiens has been signed by Vancouver Canucks of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) and he has set his target of making a permanent spot on their roster.
The 6-foot-2, right winger had played just one match for the Canucks team in 2009-2010 season and just 12 games in 2010-2011 season as he spent most of the time at minor leagues.
The deal is signed for one year and it is a two-way deal which means that he will get $600,000 for playing in the NHL and $105,000 for playing in the minor leagues, like he has mostly done before. He was even traded to Calgary Flames for some part of the
2011-2012 season where he played 10 games.
27-year-old Desbiens was selected 116th overall in the 2003 NHL draft by Atlanta Thrashers as he started his hockey career with Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and played there for four years before playing for
Chicago Wolves of American Hockey League (AHL) and Gwinnett Gladiators of East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). He even tried to play with Atlanta Thrashers, who had drafted him but could suit their style of play and could not get fit in their lineup.
In 2007-2008 he was released by them and joined Vancouver Canucks organisation that sent to their AHL affiliates Manitoba Moose. He also had some time with Abbotsford Heat and Calgary Flames in 2011-2012 season.
One thing that he would be looking to change is that he is not that a single goal, assist and point in 23 NHL games he has played.
While talking in an interview with The Province, Desbiens said,
“I know I’m a depth player and I don’t think anybody expects me to make the team out of training camp, and that’s OK. It was the same thing when I made the team a couple of years ago. But I know what I can do and they know what to expect from me. If I have
a good enough camp and I mix things up, you never know what can happen. I’m looking to make everybody change their mind and keep me on the team.”
