Guillaume Rufin devastates Facundo Bagnis to book a spot in the main draw – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
French contender, Guillaume Rufin, flashed past the Argentinean rising star, Facundo Bagnis, with a bagel and a breadstick at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 on Tuesday. He jolted down a spectacular 6-0, 6-1 victory against the 22-year-old
to advance into the opening round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event held in Miami, United States.
The 21-year-old went in a nine-game killing spree to pocket this match in straight sets at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. He barely sweated in this 64-minute clash and secured a place in the opening round at key Biscayne.
Ranked 173rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Rufin blasted into the Floridian hard courts and wiped out all six games successively to pull out the opener with a bagel. The French dusted away the
only breakpoint he came across and cashed in three out of nine break opportunities to earn the spotlight.
Rufin maintained his intensity in the following set and stroke out the proceeding three games in a row before the Argentinean could come on the score sheet. He then capitalised on another break chance in the sixth game and ultimately
sealed the set by winning six games to one.
Summing up the lower ranked challenger’s performance, Rufin formulated a poor first serve share of 49 per cent as compared to the Argentinean’s 60 per cent but impressively marked 19 out of 24 points on it. He also fired seven
aces and sought 13 break opportunities.
Next challenge for Ruffin is the German ace, Tommy Haas, in the opening round of this event.
David Goffin will accompany the French in the main draw. He stunned the Rufin’s compatriot, Benoit Paire, in straight sets to advance. The Belgian slid entire serves without facing any real challenge and capitalised on four out
of seven break chances to clobber a 6-2, 6-2 score line against the qualifying fifth seed. He also produced a better first serve share and took full advantage of the seven double faults Paire committed.
The world number 148, Goffin, will next confront the local star, Donald Young.
