Guillaume Rufin prevailed over Juan-Sebastian Cabal in the quarter-finals – Quito Challenger 2012 CH
Second seeded, Guillaume Rufin journey into the semi-finals of the Quito Challenger 2012 held at the clay courts of Ecuador. The French contender outplayed the Colombian challenger,
Juan-Sebastian Cabal, consolidating the fierce three setter win, 4-6, 7-6(12), 6-3,
after a tough battle against on the eve of Friday. He swiftly journeyed into the semi-finals and is ready to upset all the over powering odds in his way.
The 22-year-old French professional commenced the opener at a reasonable momentum but as time kicked, his pace capsized. Cabal levelled the score line in the fourth game and dissolved
his rival’s serve in the very next game. Gradually, he constructed his impetus and confidently sustained his winning roll until the end. The Colombian professional skilfully pocketed away all the remaining games, terminating the set with a 6-4 score line.
The second set proved to be a remarkably tough encounter between the two challengers. The 26-year-old Colombian native was unable to retain his former lead and Rufin took hold of this
opportunity. He nudged forward to grab the initial three games and stamped his 3-0 lead, at the end of the third game. However, Cabal did not give up so easily and he responded back to his rival by breaking his serve in the fifth game. After that point, the
scores repeatedly evened out, one after the other serve game. The French professional emerged to the surface after an astonishingly tough tiebreaker round and engraving a 7-6(12) set win.
The 26-year-old Colombian professional was completely demoralized in the decider. Although, he struggled in the initial part, he eventually brought the scores to 2-all by the end of the
fourth game. Rufin cashed his rival’s serve in the fifth game and effortlessly journeyed to the end. The French junior terminated the final set with a 6-3 win.
The Colombian senior put a good show by bombarding nine aces onto his rival and had a relatively better initial serve of 68 percent. He converted 51 of 67 first and just 19 of 32 second
delivery points. On the other hand, the French right-hander attacked his rival by firing 17 aces but also double faulted five times. He secured his lead by capitalizing on three of seven serve breaks presented.
