Guillaume Rufin runs down Alessandro Giannessi in opening fixture – Medellin Challenger 2011
Guillaume Rufin, French world No.239, hammered the higher ranked Italian, Alessandro Giannessi, world No.140, in the first round fixture of Medellin Challenger 2011 on Monday, 31st of October pulling him down in straight
set 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 9 minutes clay court fixture.
With the two walking down the clay court, Giannessi won the toss and served in the opener. However, with a super return game, Rufin broke the higher ranked Italian in game one and took the lead, 1-0. Unable to gain advantage of
the breakpoint, Frenchman broke down with the scores levelling back up at 1-1.
Breaking for the second time in the opening three games of the match, Rufin took the lead again, 2-1, and served out the following game to extend his lead to 3-1. Italian 21-year-old did cut back the lead to 2-3, however, could
not break again to level up the scores.
Maintaining his lead, Rufin stormed game six and kept the two games lead, 4-2. With just two more wins to bag the set, world No.239 blew away game seven, breaking the Italian, 5-2, and served out game eight to finish off the set
winning, 6-2.
Losing the first set, Giannessi tried his luck in the second, and yet again, broke down serving the opener. Rufin put on the lead as he served out the second game to capture the first two games, 2 -0. However, Frenchman was still
not over with the beating as he struck back again and again.
Break-n-serving again, Rufin bagged two more back-to-back games to lead the second set, 4-0. Finally with his first win, Giannessi rolled down his side of the scoreboard, 4-1 yet could not break back. Continuing to bag games on
his serve, Rufin pocketed another winner, 5-1, before the Italian struck back.
Serving out game seven, the 21-year-old broke the lower ranked Frenchman in game eight and served out the next, game nine, to cut the lead to just one game, 5-4. Although the Italian came back up a long way, he was still unable
to cut the one game difference and level up.
Rufin served out the final game of the set, game ten, 6-4, and swirled away winning match in straight and easy sets to up the higher ranked Italian.
Knocking out Giannessi of the ATP Challenger Tour, the Frenchman now moves on to play the winner of the match between Columbian, Eduardo Struvay and Laurent Recouderc, Frenchman, to battle out the second round of the Medellin Challenger
2011.
