Quick Step team’s Guillaume van Keirsbulck took the second victory in his career as he put in a tremendous performance and outsprinted nine breakaway cyclists in Omloop van het Houtland Lichtervelde 2011 on Wednesday, September 21. Recently, he took first
place in GP Briek Schotte race.
The race started and finished in Lichtervelde. The 20-year-old Belgian professional cyclists took a total of 4 hours, 17 minutes to cover the long distance of 193.6 kilometres. Stefan Van Dijk of Veranda's Willems-Accent was in runner-up spot and Mark McNally
of An Post-Sean Kelly finished third with the same timing as the Belgian.
After winning the stage, Keirsbulck told the media, “Personally it’s a great satisfaction. My legs didn’t feel so great during the race but in the final I tried attacking anyway to select a little group for the sprint.”
In the final kilometres, the group of nine cyclists made their first breakaway lead including, Van Keirsbulck, Stefan Van Dijk, Mark McNally, Timon Seubert, Bram Tankink, John Murphy, Sven Vandousselaere, Roy Curvers and Sascha Weber.
All of them worked hard together and built an advantage of a few seconds while Timon Seubert, Bram Tankink and John Murphy were caught by the peloton after a few kilometres.
Van Dijk and McNally launched an attack to catch Keirsbulck but failed as he crossed the finish line ahead of the other cyclists. Sascha Weber tried his best to take a lead but was unable to hold his pace and grabbed ninth place with a difference of 2 seconds
ahead of Aidis Kruopis (Landbouwkrediet). Keirsbulck put in a brilliant performance as he was able to take an impressive victory.
He further added, "This formed a group with nine racers. In the last few kilometers I tried a solo, but the other breakaway riders didn't let me get away. In the sprint I was ideally placed."
Jimmy Engoulvent (Saur-Sojasun), Davy Commeyne (Landbouwkrediet) and Alexander Kristoff (BMC Racing Team) were in thirteen, fourteen and fifteen place respectively.
