Guillermo Garcia-Lopez stunned by Marco Chiudinelli in the opener – Swiss Indoors Basel 2012
Ranked 65th in the world, Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez crashed out after getting defeated by local wild card entrant, Marco Chiudinelli, in the first round of the Swiss Indoors Basel.
Garcia-Lopez captured the first set but the Swiss player, who was hugely supported by home crowd, bounced back to win the following two and clinch the contest 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Start of the match was pretty stable, as both players won their serve in the opening 10 games to equalise the score at 5-5. Garcia-Lopez stung a break in the 11th and consolidated on it to claim the first set 7-5.
The Spanish contestant gave mixed performance on his serve, as he banged in three aces but also committed four doubles faults at the same time. The 29-year-old had a low first serve percentage of 44 but succeeded in converting
13 of the 18 of them into points.
Garcia-Lopez and Chiudinelli started the second set by holding their serve in the opening two games and levelling the score at 1-1. The Spaniard earned a breakthrough in the third to go up 2-1 but Chiudinelli hit back immediately
to square it off at 2-2. The Swiss participant struck again in the eighth and served it out at 5-3.
Chiudinelli smashed two aces and made a single double fault, keeping his first serve percentage at 59 and securing 11 of the 16 points on them. The 31-year-old won most of the points on second deliveries and first returns, as he
claimed seven of the 11 and seven of the 13 points on them.
The Swiss player carried winning momentum into the final set and made a fine start, hitting blows to Garcia-Lopez in the first and third game, consolidating on the double strike to take a 4-0 lead. The Spaniard reduced deficit
to 3-4 by winning three in a row but he failed to broke back second time, going down 4-6.
It took Chiudinelli two hours and 41 minutes to complete this victory over the Spaniard.
The Swiss veteran is drawn to lock horns with the third seed, Richard Gasquet of France, in the second round.
