Guillermo Garcia steamrolls Somdev Devvarman in opening round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Guillermo Garcia, Spanish world No.53, outplayed Indian world No.84, Somdev Devvarman, in the first round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011. Playing at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai, China, blue circuit today,
Monday, 10th October, the Spaniard disrupted his opponent 6-4, 6-3, in an hour and 27 minutes to walk away into the 2nd round of the ATP World Tour Masters Event.
Despite the disparity in their rankings a clear cut winner could not be predicted. Yet it was unsure that the struggling Spaniard would either make his way into the next round or give way to the Indian to stand against the top
seed in round 2.
Kicking off first, Garcia served out the first set starter saving a near breakpoint and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following with a win, Devvarman served his first game and levelled up next, 1-1. Rallying down the two levelled
up at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 winning back-to-back service games.
However, Garcia turned the tables, as he served out game 9 and broke the Indian in game 10 to walk away with the first set, 6-4 and onto the 2nd. Devvarman, who is highest ranked Indian at the moment, did not have much
weapons in his arsenal to counter the vicious forehands and cross-court shots played by the Spaniard.
Anyhow, with the second set on its way, Garcia served out the first game of set two and switched the serve. Levelling up next, Devvarman followed with a win and stood to return again. As the two rallied out a game each next, 2-2,
Garcia unleashed his powerful serves and forehands to outdo the Indian world No.53, 3-2.
Breaking Devvarman next, game 6, the Spaniard claimed another win before he was broken back for the first time in the game, 4-3. With just 2 more games left for the world No.53 to swallow the Indian, the 28-year-old went ballistic
as he broke the lower ranked counterpart and served out game 9, 6-3, to clinch the first round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011 in straight sets.
Through to the second round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000, the Spaniard now faces compatriot and top seed, Rafael Nadal in the second round of the event. Predictably, Garcia stands no chance in front of the top seed.
