Guillermo Moscoso shines as Oakland Athletics defeat Seattle Mariners 2-0 – MLB Update
Oakland Athletics’ starter, Guillermo Moscoso was impressive with his pitching as he threw seven score-less innings with an ERA of 2.16 and had five strike-outs in the Athletics’ 2-0 win against the Seattle Mariners at O.co Coliseum, Oakland on July 6.
The Athletics started well as they scored one run during the first inning to get a 1-0 lead. Scott Sizemore struck a solo homer (404 feet) towards left-field to lift the potential of the Athletics from the beginning. The pitchers did not permit any batter
to take a run and struck them out on their tricky pitches.
At the top of the second inning, Dustin Ackley drove a single-run shot towards right-field but Justin Smoak was struck-out swinging. Carlos Peguero also struck-out swinging and Franklin Gutierrez flied out to centre-field. The Athletics’ offence also seemed
powerless as Sizemore was struck-out looking and Hideki Matsui grounded out to short-stop at the bottom of the third inning.
Brendan Ryan was grounded out to short-stop and Adam Kennedy popped out to short-stop while playing sluggish shots at the top of the fourth inning. Moscoso gave up just two hits without any walk on his 109 pitches.
Speaking to reporters, Moscoso said, “Like I said before the game. I have to be focused today and not worry about if this would be my last start. I just had to stay focused and make quality pitches today and give the team a chance to win. That's what we're
looking for.”
During the fifth inning, the Athletics’ batters raised their lead 2-0 when Sizemore singled towards centre-field and Cliff Pennington contributed the last run of the game. The final four innings went without any score for both sides. Kurt Suzuki was grounded
out to short-stop while Pennington lined out to second base at the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge said, “Sizemore got him a couple times but Jason threw the ball well again, gave us every opportunity to win the ballgame. You can't say enough about how consistent he's been. He was efficient all day long.”
The Mariners were score-less until the ninth inning as the batters failed to hit scoring shots as Ichiro Suzuki flied out to left-field, Ryan grounded out to short-stop and Kennedy popped out towards third base. The Athletics won their first game after a
long time but the Mariners snatched the three-game series 2-1.
