Guillermo Olaso defeats Antonio Veic in first round – SkiStar Swedish Open 2011
Spanish Guillermo Olaso and Antonio Veic from Croatia, qualifying to the main draw of the SkiStar Swedish Open 2011 met each other in their first round match on Monday. Guillermo showed exceptional skill and kept a steady head
throughout the match, winning 6-4, 6-1 and guaranteed a position for himself in the second round of the tournament.
The match between the two equally matched contestants was comparatively simple and lacked the punch offered by other matches during the day.
The ambidextrous Guillermo currently ranked at 182 slid down a point earlier this week but is sure to continue his steady climb up the ranking charts, if he continues performing. Antonio Veic, singles ranking 196, had performed
exceptionally throughout the year easily qualifying to enter the main draws of the French Open, eventually losing to Rafael Nadal in the third round. However Veic’s performance in the match was uncharacteristic of his past results. We sincerely hope that he
picks up his game.
Despite Veic’s better performance, in contrast to Olaso in the first set, he was unable to get many points. Veic had a first serve accuracy of 72% against Olaso’s 57% but he failed to pick many points of these first serves, getting
only 12 out of his 21 serves. Olaso managed to bag 17 of his 26 serve points despite his lowly first serve accuracy of 57%. Olaso also gave away 4 double faults but in the end managed to win the set with the score at 6-4.
Veic’s defences, if he had any in the first set, crumbled completely hereafter. Olaso registered three successful breakpoint conversions and spectacularly won all of his serve points (9 out of 9, a serve efficiency of 100%) wreaking
havoc on his feeble opponent. Veic who probably couldn’t cope with the game’s mounting pressure made as many as four double faults and his serve accuracy, which had been his vanguard in the first set, dwindled to a measly 54%. Olaso cleanly took home this
set too and the game with it by scoring 6-1.
Olaso will now face his first real competition in the tournament as his next match is against the fourth seeded Nicolas Almagro, a fellow Spaniard and currently ranked at No. 14 in the singles ranking. Almagro received a bye into
the next round.
