Guillermo Olaso ousts Gianluca Naso to move into main draw – SkiStar Swedish Open 2011
Seeded third in the qualifying round of the Swedish Open 2011 Guillermo Olaso, from Spain effectively ousted the seventh seed, Italian Gianluca Naso from the tournament in just under two hours. Of the four qualifying finals played
on Monday, this was probably the most action packed one and Olaso managed a clean three set dismissal.
Naso opened the first set in a dominating position at the red clay courts of the ATP World Tour 250 Series’ Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden. With greater first serve accuracy than Olaso, Naso easily managed to win 14 of the 17 points
on his service. This coupled with Naso’s two aces meant that Olaso could never recover and hence the first set ended 3-6 in Naso’s favor.
However, Olaso returned to the courts for the second and third sets with renewed determination. He managed to swiftly obliterate Naso’s initial position of strength and went on to win the match. Despite a lower par serve accuracy
of only 54%, Olaso managed to bag 16 of the 20 points on his service, an accuracy of around 80%. This and the easily managed breakpoint recovery proved to be the decisive factors in the set and Olaso won 6-3.
In the third set, which eventually proved to be the match’s last, Olaso continued his form from the previous set. Despite Naso’s improved performance in the service department, he could never have recovered from the tides that
were Olaso’s five outstanding aces. Olaso’s consistent and error free performance was a sure shot recipe for success, which was in stark contrast to Naso whose 2 double faults meant that he could never recover from the debacle. Olaso sealed the third set
at 6-4 and reserved for himself a place in main draws of the SkiStar Swedish Open.
Olaso’s 3-6, 6-3 and 6-4 win over Naso means that the Spaniard will now face the qualifying fourth seed Antonio Veic from Croatia in the first round of the tournament.
Veic moved into the main draw after doing away with qualifying fifth seed Javier Marti from Spain in a seeded final qualifying round.
Taking less than two hours, Veic struck two aces as he secured an impressive 74 percent win on his first serve to secure a 6-4, 6-4 win over Marti. Saving two of four, Veic converted four of eight breakpoint opportunities to his
advantage to secure a pass into the main draw of the event.
