Guillermo Olaso ousts Pablo Galdon; moves to the main draws – German Tennis Championships 2011
Eighth seed Spaniard Guillermo Olaso easily moved past opponent Pablo Galdon of Argentina to secure a place in the main draws of the bet-at-home Open German Tennis Championships 2011. Olaso eased past his unseeded opponent and
took away the game in two straight sets ending at 7-6(5), 6-3. The match lasted for a little under an hour and a half.
The Spanish Olaso, currently ranked at 167 has been performing especially well in the last couple of weeks. He recently qualified to enter the main draws of the Swedish Open at Bastad, Sweden and reached the second round of the
main draws only to be defeated by world No. 14 Nicolas Almagro. Olaso has been a permanent feature on the ITF circuit this season and has even grabbed a title in Spain at ITF Futures this May. Previously in the tournament, Olaso defeated German Andre Begemann
in the first round.
Pablo Galdon, who hasn’t been seeded in the tournament, came to this round by defeating fifth seed Thomas Schoorel, a Dutch player, in a surprising turn of events.
Galdon opened the first set by serving first and registered a break of serve in the second game. Olaso countered it by breaking Galdon’s serve in the next game and the scores steadily and surely built up to the 5-5 mark. Both the
players had an almost equal first serve percentage but it was Olaso’s ability to bag 17 points off his 22 serves which eventually won him the set. The two players continued fighting till set dragged on to the tie break. Olaso staying true to his form easily
managed to win the tie break by securing 7 points against Galdon’s 5. The first set thus went to Olaso at 7-6(5).
Whatever elixir Galdon had in the first set, quickly wore off in the second. His first serve percentage fell to a dismal 44% and this cost him the set, even though he managed to get an outstanding 10 of the 11 serve points. Olaso
meanwhile gathered 14 points of his 18 serves and did not face even a single break of serve in the entire set. Olaso finished off the match by registering a decisive break of serve in the eight game of the second set, limiting Galdon to just 15 points. The
set ended 6-3 in Olaso’s favour.
Olaso will now face fellow qualifier Victor Crivoi in his first round match at the main draws of the tournament. Seeded at eleven in the qualifiers, Crivoi had defeated top seed Lukas Rosol to secure his position in the main draws.
