Guillermo Olaso upsets Evgeny Donskoy in second round – Madrid Challenger 2011
Spanish tennis pro Guillermo Olaso battled past number eight seed Evgeny Donskoy of Russia 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4 on Tuesday to book his place in the second round of 2011 Madrid Challengers here in Madrid, Spain.
Unseeded at the Association of Tennis Professionals tournament, Olaso looked in terrific form in a match that lasted for nearly 2 hours and 24 minutes. Hitting his way out of trouble on many occasions, the Spaniard played the big
points extremely well to put his opponent under immense pressure.
Showing amazing fighting spirit and determination, Olaso clinched the opening set in the tie-breaker. Although he lost his track a bit in second set, he was able to come up with his A game in the third and final set to seal a memorable
victory. Smashing his big forehand and backhand winners all over the court, he made Donskoy’s game look completely ineffective.
Using the hit and volley technique extremely effectively, he earned valuable net points. Hitting four serve aces and 74 per cent first serve conversion; he served with control and accuracy. Ranked 191th in the world, Olaso will
be very content with the way he responded to difficult situations in the match. To achieve similar results, he must try and bring more consistency in serve department of his game. He will be eying another strong performance in his quarterfinal match-up.
Making very few unforced errors, Olaso played a very controlled match. Breaking his opponent at crucial moments, he looked in control right from the start. Trailing 4-1 in the first tie-breaker, he raised the level of his game
play as he secured five straight points to set up two set points for himself. Converting the second one with a blistering backhand winner down the line, he took 1-0 set score lead.
Donskoy fought back brilliantly to clinch the second set 6-4 on a break of serve. However, he failed to handle the heat in the decider to let his opponent seal an emphatic victory.
