Guillermo Rigondeaux has one thing in mind: breaking records
With a win against Ricardo Cordoba on Saturday, prospective featherweight fighter Guillermo Rigondeaux can break records by winning a world title with just seven professional fights.
Currently the record for winning a world title with least fights is held by Leon Spinks, who demolished Muhammad Ali for the WBC and WBA heavyweight crowns in just his eighth professional fight in 1978.
In an interview with
Fanhouse, Rigondeaux said: “I want to break Leon Spinks' record. This is a great opportunity to be on a stage like this. I know that after Saturday night, I'll be able to position myself to have a lot more big stages to fight in.”
Rigondeaux (6-0, 5 KOs) will have his hands full with Cordoba (37-2, 23 KOs), who boasts a win over the near legendary Celestino Caballero.  Cordoba has established himself as one of the best fighters
in the featherweight division.
In part he will fight a game Rigondeaux who has been aided by the legend of his amateur career, in which he accrued a record of over 200 wins with less than five defeats.  With that on his resume, as well
as smoothly dismantling all six of his opponents so far, Rigondeaux finds himself in a potentially record breaking bout for an interim featherweight title.
"I'm extremely happy about this fight and I'm ready for it,” Rigondeaux confirmed.  “I've taken my training very seriously for this fight, and I'm in tremendous condition.  I want to go out here and make
the best of it and win this fight in spectacular fashion."
Cordoba, 27, has won his last three fights, two by way of knockout.  He was dethroned as WBA super bantamweight champ by Brian Dunne in March of 2009.
"I haven't seen much of Cordoba on video because I don't watch them,” Rigondeaux said.  “I leave that up to my trainers.  But, you know, I'm a two-time gold medal winner. I am Guillermo Rigondeaux. Cordoba
will bring out my skills, and, so, you know, I could very easily steal the show."
