Guillermo Satt and Brendon Gibbens progress to Round 4 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic
Chile’s Guillermo Satt and South Africa’s Brendon Gibbens made their way through into Round 4 (Round of 64) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic after claiming top honours in their respective Round 3 (Round of 96) heats
that went down at the Huntington Beach in California, America, on Thursday, March 29.
Brazil’s Caue Wood and Argentina’s Marcelo Rodriguez successfully extended their life in the event as well after snatching first runner-up place in the 11th and 12th heat of Round 3 respectively.
With the competition field comprising of both international as well as local talent, there was an electrified atmosphere at the event site on Thursday. There was plenty of crowd in attendance at the event site, supporting the local surfers while capitalising
on the opportunity to see the international surfers in action.
Squaring off with Wood, Mexico’s Dylan Southworth and Hawaii’s Billy Kemper in the 11th heat, Satt managed to emerge triumphant in what turned out to be a low-scoring affair. The Chilean surfer caught his first business-wave halfway through the
heat to post a 6.77 on the score-board and soon followed it up with a 3.10-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 9.87 points.
Wood survived the Round 3 showdown as well after scoring a 5.17 and 4.17 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 9.34 points to grab runner-up place.
Southworth finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.13 points, whereas Kemper rounded out the bottom-position after scoring a two-wave total of 6.67 points. Both the surfers consequently got eliminated from the competition.
The 12th heat saw Gibbens put on a superb performance to down Rodriguez and the two Hawaiian surfers, namely Dylan Goodale and Kalani David.
The South African surfer got off to a modest start, but gradually built momentum to eventually begin his charge. Locking his first business-wave, Gibbens posted a 6.67 on the score-board and soon added an additional 8.83 to his account to finish with a heat-total
of 15.50 points.
Rodriguez finished behind Gibbons in runner-up place after scoring a heat-total of 12.80 points, which included a couple of scores in the six-point range.
Goodale and David rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 10.17 and 8.84 points respectively.
