I just brought home three male guinea pigs yesterday and I was giving them some fresh iceberg lettuce to eat (In addition to there pellets) and then I was reading that iceberg lettuce is bad for them? Is it, and do you know why or why not?

  1. my guinea pigs eat iceburg letuce all the time, but romaine lettuce is better. these are also pretty good, but it also depends on if your guinea pig likes the food or not:

carrots, watermelon, apples, lettuce, bananas, and strawberries

  2. Iceberg lettuce is considered unsafe because it can cause diarrhea.  Other types of lettuce like romaine, endive and red leaf lettuce are just fine.  Actually, they seem to be highly appreciated around here.

There is a fantastic guide to a proper diet for a guinea pig here:

  3. guinea pig numer one food that the'll go crazy for is cucumbar.  they love it to death and cant get enough of it every day.

  4. When I had guinea pigs, they LOVED carrots.

  5. Iceberg lettuce is simply water and fiber. Nothing else. Feed greens and lettuce that are dark green in color in adddition to lots of citrus fruits.
