Guinea Pig Information???

I'm looking to get a Guinea Pig. I'm not totally sure what I'm looking for but here is what I want so far:

A baby Teddy (or Satin Teddy) Guinea Pig of any color (preferably gold, orange, or brown) except all white.

It would stay indoors, in my room.

I'd like a baby or very young one so I can have it become familiar with people and very friendly and happy.

But I want to know if I could find one at a Petsmart, how the temperements differ between male and females, what I would need to take care of it, and the amount of maintenence it would require.

I currently have a 3 year old Pug and a hamster.

  2. Females are the better choice as far as temperment.....   Males are docile in the beginning, but usually begin to change when they become juveniles and can become aggressive......     they also cause more odor problems than the females do......     if you aren't able to get two guinea pigs, you need to make sure that you spend a lot of time with the piggy that you choose......   because they don't like to be alone, and can become stressed......      hope this helps!!!

  3. I raise many guinea pigs. My best advice to you is to buy a good guinea pig book. There is so much to learn. They are delicate animals and need complete care to keep them alive. It is hard to find Teddy bears, Satins and Peruvian long hairs without going to a breeder. I raise Absynians which are medium haired. Most generally the males are a little friendlier than the females, but not always true. I have a couple of females that are very friendly. If you are good  with them and earn their trust they will be friendlier. Guinea pigs are very shy animals. Giving them attention a couple hours a day is a plus.

Buy them the biggest cage possible with a solid plastic or wooden bottom floor to it. No mesh wire bottom cages. They can seriously injure their legs. Aquariums is not a good choice either. Guinea pigs need open barred cages with plenty of air circulation. It is best to keep them indoors. Also be careful to not over heat your guinea pig. They can easily have heat strokes in hot temperatures. Keep them in air conditioned rooms in the summer, but not to drafty.

Use paper or pine bedding. If using pine, air it out for a while before putting it in a cage. With open barred cages it will be ok. Never use cedar bedding. The high aroma is a killer for your guinea pigs respitory system.

Feed your piggy plenty of fruits and veggies with vitamin C. Their bodies doesn't produce vitamin C on their own and need plenty of it to survive. They love carrots and timothy hay along with pellets enriched with vitamin C. No onions, garlic or potatoes. Always wash off their produce for pesticides. Cut the bad ends off of carrots and any mold off of th produce.

Guinea pigs are most generally healthy, but if you ever need a veternarian, chose one that knows guinea pigs. Not any will do. An inexperienced veternarian can kill a guinea pig. They can not have antibiotics or it will kill them. There are very few medications that a guinea pig can safely have. Guinea pigs make wonderful pets. Good Luck!

  4. guinea pigs are great pets.. they usually feel better when there is at least 2. I like females.. but ive had amazing male pigs too... i dont think theyre personalities really change that much between male and females.  I got my current female from petland, and ive had her five years.... as long as you give them plenty of attention, learn theyre sounds to understand what they want, and give them PLENTY of vitamin C, you should be fine.

  5. get a female petco is good i got two of mine there u will need a big sized one leveled cage food water bottle timothy hay bedding and igloo hiding place chew sticks for there teeth and they will b bout 12 weeks which is very young and u will prolly want two u can buy another one later bu not too much later so they are still young they live happier with two and u will need to clean their cage once a week and females get along better with a very Little risk of fighting as for males they don't get along too well
