Question:

Guinea Pig Mites? (Plz read and answer)

At the end of June my guinea pigs were successfully treated for mites. They have been mite free ever since. My question is that they had cage 'furniture' that was in their cage when they had the mites, but during treatment I took it out fearing that it could be contaminated and give them mites again. I put these items in plastic bags and sealed them shut and put them in my closet. They have been like that since about the end of June/early July, Can I put them back in their cage now for them to use, or should I just throw them away and get new items for their cage.? Thanks in advance!! :]

  1. Disinfect everything with 50/50 water and vinegar. However I am pretty sure the mites would be gone by now, but to be safe.

Mites always live on the guinea pig. It's just stress and other factors that may bring the mites out. Your pig still has mites, but they just arn't active.

But like I said, just disinfect everything and you should be fine. :)

If it's anything with fabric material, you can put it through the wash with vinegar too.

  2. If it is it wooden, I'd toss it. Wood can carry mite eggs. Other plastic and soft stuff is fine.

  3. Your cage furniture should be fine, but to be safe, I'd give it a thorough washing with hot water.

  4. My advice is to get new cage furniture.  No matter what you do, the furniture will carry hairs from the guinea pigs from when they had the mites, which means they probably will get them again if you use the same furniture.

  5. Just to be safe, I would throw them away and get new ones
