I just got 3 guinea pig brothers 5 days ago, and I was wondering how long will it take for them to get used to me. I pick them up everyday but they are still really scared.

  1. well each guinea pig have their own personallity. well dont really get dissapointed if they run away from you every time you want to pick them up. guinea pigs hear better than they see. how would you feel if a big hand tryed graving you??

you would probably hide any where you think its safe.

    thats exactly what they do.

but you could get then less frighten if you talk to them before picking them up. like that they know that your their.

they will most likely get used to it and would look forward to getting picked up.

    good luck.

  2. You should hold them with a fleecy blanket, close to your chest and try to give off a warm feeling when holding them try to make sure your hands are warm as well that may keep them warm as well.It Should Take about 3-4 weeks.talk to them aswell when they squeal theyre talking to you so TALK BACK :).

    Good Luck Matey.

  3. How long it takes to get used to you really depends upon the personality of the pig. Some are more timid, some aggressive, some hyper, some laid back. You get the picture.

The more you handle them and hand feed them, the faster they will learn to trust you. Right now, you are a big scary monster to them. They don't understand that you don't want to eat them for a snack. With that said, be patient.

Always approach them slowly and talk softly when you enter the room so that they know you're there & you don't surprise them. When you reach for them, reach very s-l-o-w-l-y. Fast movements scare the daylights out of them. Try to always have a treat in your hand (a bit of parsley, a baby carrot, etc.) so they begin to associate seeing you with good things (food!). Pretty soon they'll be standing at the side of the cage, wheeking for you to come get them!

    Good luck!

  4. Hi,

    Congratulations on your new piggies!

Just continue to gently pick them up. Don't raise your voice around them, run up to their cage, or anything loud because that will make them terrified. I just got two new dwarf hamsters and one of them is fat and now he loves my hand because i give him sunflower seeds and he eats them out of my hand. He's so cute! Now he will just crawl up my hand. Some Guinea Pigs take more time than others. Just give them some soothing bedding, toys, etc. and try to get them used to your scent. If one LOVES treats try winning them over by giving them sunflower seeds until he eats them from your hand! REMEMBER TO BE PATIENT!

    love,

    animal helper

    P.S.

You are welcome to email me to tell me about your new guinea pigs!

  5. Mine are still terrified of me after 5 years. It's the nature of the animal and I love them!

  6. Depending on who else is handling them ( I assume no one, right?), it will take them at least two weeks to get used to you. 3-4 months to get atached to you truly. Faster, if you hand-feed them while you hold them. But it depends on the individual piggy , too. some are just shy, and take a little longer, while some will jump at you and be your friend at day three (as long as you hold a piece of cucumber in your hand, that is!;)) )

  7. you just need to be patient.

Soon enough your guinea pigs should come round and become tame enough for you to pick them up with their acceptance.

Spending alot of time with your guinea pig is a good way to gain its confidence but dont overwhelm them.

Some guinea pigs can take agers to become tame, you just have to be patient.

Make sure when you pick your guinea pigs up that you let them know that you arent going to hurt them.

    Hope this helps

  8. u need a life

    your just looking to hard

  9. It will maybe take close to a month, it takes a while.  Just give a lot of love an patience and they will come around.

  10. if they are babys they will take about 2 weeks

if they are adults they will take 1 month

  11. i just got two baby boy guinea pigs, and they rarley come out of their igloo. it might take them close to a month to get to know the sound of your voice and your scent. just give them time, dont worry, they WILL open up to you soon.
