  1. If the hay is truly stuck to the skin, you don't want to just yank it off. You could damage the skin.

You'll need to try to extrude the p***s and then gently tug on the hay to see if it will release easily. If not, get some baby or mineral oil and smear a bit on the hay where it meets the skin with a cotton bud (Q-Tip). Then gently try to ease the hay out.

Boars commonly get hay and stray pieces of bedding stuck in their unmentionables, both front and rear. Its a good policy to check your boar a couple of times each month to make sure there's nothing stuck. :P

  2. No, I wouldn't just pull it. You'd risk irritating the area and hurting him. Feel right above his p***s, there should be a hard, triangle shaped area. Push down on that until the p***s pops out of the sheath and the hay isn't stuck under it anymore. Then you can safely remove the hay, if you want you can use a damp q-tip to wipe it off. I know it sounds gross, but with male guinea pigs this happens often. Good luck, I've dealt with it before and it's not fun!

  3. Hello,

I'll give you some general boar care issues first, and then the p***s issue second since they related:

General tips on grooming, bathing, ear cleaning, nail trimming:

    http://www.guinealynx.info/grooming.html

That link talks about the grease gland, which boars tend to have more of an issue with.  You'll want to make sure that doesn't build up.

You are also going to want to clean the p***s, anal sac, and external genitals once a week:

    http://www.guinealynx.info/impaction.htm...

Impaction is when f***s get stuck in the anal sac.  You probably won't have this problem in a young boar. The reason I bring it up is that the method for checking for this is the same as the regular cleaning you should do.

Boars drag their sac on the ground to mark their scent and so they pick up hay and bedding.   You want to check for stuck things once a week. The link has pictures and tells you what to do.

When you are doing all of the above (checking the anal sac, cleaning) you need to check and clean the p***s.  The link describes it, but I'll tell you how I do it for my boars so you can do it fast now.

-You need qtips soaked in mineral oil or water if you don't have the oil.

-Extrude the p***s (website tells you how, but just press down gently).

-Use the qtips to remove anything that isn't pink skin. You will probably have to spend a bit of time to clean it if you have never done it.

-Look carefully!  If you see any irratation, swelling, puss (this is after you have cleaned out smegma and dried s***n), or if your pig screams in pain you need to get him to the vet to treat the infection.  Your hay may have done this.

-Get a fresh qitp, dip it in oil, coat the p***s and slide it back in the sheath.   If the p***s is irratated from the hay it may want to not go in or slide out.  Keep checking the pig, coating the p***s in oil, and trying to put it back in.

If you have trouble, bed the pig in a small cage on white towels.  Wood chips or carefresh will only irratate the p***s further.

  4. you could leave it alone.

  5. Justified, Eeny, and Feylin gave you great advice. Unfortunately, this won't be the last time you will be dealing with this. Boars are notorious for getting thing stuck in their sacs. Mineral Oil really does help make things smoother. Please listen to theur advice. Good Luck.
