Guinea Pig Question.?

I have a Question, i have had my guinea pig for about 3 weeks now, and he still is scared (i think) of being petted. Well when i clean his cage and i put him in his big box thingy he lets us pet him (but i think its because he doesn't have as much space for him to run away from us as he does in his cage.) but when he is in his cage won't let you touch him. :S and its weird. He doesn't bite or anything but he runs away from you even if you accidentally touch him. Help.! and I'm scared he will run away from me when i carry him so currently i can only touch him when he is out of his cage in this box thingy. :S so what can i do to help. I have put my hand in his cage quite often, i often head feed him veggie because i don't want to mix wet foods with his dry. i didn't think hes that scared anymore, but I'm not sure... Can anyone help me??

  1. Your piggie might be one who's not thrilled about being handled.  You have to keep trying to pick it up or it'll only get more skitterish.  Don't get it mad to the point that it chatters or bites.  Work on it slowly and tenderly, like a small child.  A piggie is so much fun once you can get the handling thing to work out.

  2. Some guinea pigs are shyer than others.

I have 2 guinea pigs, and my boar (male) was terribly shy, but he warmed up to me in a month. He STILL runs away from me when I try to pet him, even after a year, bur he's better. I'm guessing your pig might be like that too, but it depends.

It might help if you get him a buddy. A spayed female would make an excellent partner. My sow and boar live happily together! (the boar is neutered.)

  3. Well, maybe your piggy doesn't know your scent yet. I suggest that next time you change his bedding, rub your hands through it so that he will smell a little bit of your scent and get to know it. Then he will become used to you and will become less afraid and will want to be handled more often. Hope this helps!

  4. Most Guinea Pigs are like that. I have had mine for nine years now and she still doesnt like to be held, if  you think about it, if you were that size and had a huge hand coming at your face wouldnt you be a little scared to? But like most animals the way to there hearts is through there stomachs, so just keep givin him love and treats and he should come around
