Question:

Guinea Pig UTI Treatment?

by  |  earlier

In the last 8 or so hours, my guinea pig been randomly shrieking in short bursts and there are brownish smudges around his cage. I believe he has a UTI, and I am currently searching for a vet in my area who offers services for guinea pigs.

In the meantime, I was wondering how much a vet exam and/or treatment (with Bactrim or other antibiotic) would cost. Just like the economy, my bank account isn't doing so hot right now so it would be nice to have a warning on how much this will set me back!

Thank you very much for your help!

  1. It depends on the diagnosis.

If it is just a uti, then the antibiotic and visit could end up costing as much as 100. I dont think it will cost that much if it is a uti though.

It could be stones, which will set you back. I had one piggy that had surgery to remove stones and it was around 500.

If you go to a cavy savvy vet, it will probably turn out cheaper because they wont have to do un-needed procedures and they wont take as long doing whats needed.

www.guinealynx.com, take a look at this site. It can help you save your piggies life, especially if a cavy savvy vet is not around/open.

  2. For small exotics my vet only charges $19 but I know that other places charge alot more. If you have a Petsmart in your area they have a vets office in the store called Banfield that sees exotics. The one in my area charges $33 to see the animal and the medicine wouldnt be anymore than $20 I wouldnt think. You just have to call around.

  3. I can tell you that my vet charges $28 for the office visit & $12 for the Bactrim.

However, not all vets have the same fees. You'll need to call an exotics vet to have the piggie properly treated. Most cat/dog vets don't know a hill of beans about treating guinea pigs.
