Question:

Guinea Pig isn't eating or drinking. Urgent.?

He hasn't been eating or drinking for two or three days now. He always looks tired, and his eyes are kind of watery. I am expecting the worse, but is there anything we can do?

Its a male, short haired guinea pig. I got him coming up on four years ago.

We tried hand feeding, and giving him his water bottle out of the cage. He looks sluggish, and fluffy, only a bit fluffier than normal.

What could be the cause of all of this, old age? I've also heard that he could have a tooth ache, but he was chewing on one of his toys earlier today. We also tried letting him get exercise.

Any help at all would be so very appreciated. Thanks everyone!

  1. The best thing to do for your old man is to get him a vet. It may not be possible to help him, but it can't hurt to take him and get him checked out. If he's suffering and it can't be helped you may even consider putting him down, if he seems to be in a lot of pain. I really hope the vet can do something for your boy, a lack of appetite is a definite signal to take the guinea pig to a vet!

  2. maybe its getting old or its just really depressed

  3. sounds like his life may be coming to an end.... :(  OR: does he usally have a good appitte? if not, then he is fine..they can go up to a week with out eating or drinking. to be sure, take him 2 the vet. GOOD LUCK, AND I HOPE HE IS ALRIGHT!!!!!! :)

  4. Four is not old. Your pig is still young, but very sick. You need to start hand feeding him. If you can't get any Critical Care, you can make a pellet mash. You need to feed him every 4-5 hours. Bloating up is not a good sign. Is he pooping? If not that is very serious.

  5. he probably has pneumonia which will kill him unless you get to a vet and get him some antibiotics. You must put tang in the water bottle for vitamin c. If they dont get it then they get pneumonia very easily. Giving it to him now will not help. Must see vet asap.

  6. BRING HIM TO A VET! get his teeth shaved adn feed him your self my guinie pig died becuz i was late and yea! i miss him and its sad open his or her mouth and feed him or her cut it up or somthing adn pray =( when i saw this i had to answer and rest with him and let him run around

  7. I am very sorry to say, but I had a guinea pig and this happened to mine.  After a few days he passed away.  It ended up being kidney failure.  There is really nothing you can do to prevent that, so it's DEFIANTLY not your fault.  I saw go ahead and take him to a vet, I no Hollyberry is a vet they works with all kinds of animals, see what they have to say and if they can help.

    I'm so sorry I hope s/he's okay. :-(

  8. You need to take him to the vet immediately.  You are describing some serious signs of illness.  When a guinea pig does not eat or drink that is an emergency that must be seen by a vet.

No one on here is going to be able to diagnose him, and no one will be able to help him.  You need to take him to the vet to either get treatment or to prevent him from suffering anymore.

Good luck at the vet.  If, after you've been to the vet, you need any medical help or advice you should come to this forum:

  9. that sounds familiar...that happened to my Guinea pig...she was 11 years of age(human years) and most guinea pigs live for 5 human years...but any ways i brought her to the vet and they treated her for dehydration (she was dehydrated cuz she wasn't eating drinking) and they sent me home wit medication and instructions to hand feed her baby food...carrots and sweet potato flavored... but i do believe my guinea died of old age and stopped eating cuz it was her time... i believe there is still hope for your guinea pig...most likely u should take him the vet...hope that helped u!!

  10. He could be coming to the end of his life ... guineas have a pretty short life span.  I am sorry to hear he isn't feeling well.  You seem to be doing everything you can, I hope he feels better soon.

  11. You need to take him to the vet. Yes his sluggishness could be due to old age but him not eating and not drinking plus with the almost lethargicness tells me he sounds ill. Even with old age his eyes should be bright and definatly not watery and his fur shouldnt be ruffled either. He needs to go to the vet and if he is sick they will probably give you an antibiotic for him. That is all the reccomendation that I can give you.
