Question:

Guinea Pig kicks wood shavings all over??

My guinea pig has a regular cage with bars and such. Ive had two other guinea pigs in the past and never had this problem. But this guinea pig is different- whenever she is happy she runs in circles and jumps and stuff. Its super cute, but she kicks the wood shavings all over my floor and makes a huge mess! A different type of cage is not in my budget, and neither is a hand held vaccum. If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

  1. get some  metal plates that are specially made for hanging on the cages 2 keep the shavings from falling out, i got mine for $10 at uncle bills pet store(real name of store) iv never had the problem again!

  2. Get him a wheel to let him use his energy on.  if that doesn't work get him a ball to run around in and just let him rin whenever you are in the room with him.

  3. I had this problem with my hamster before. Although there is nothing that completely stops the chips flying, you can try this:

Take a cardboard lid from a big cardboard box and put it underside-up underneath the cage. this catches most of the shavings and requires only a couple seconds to empty it if it gets full.

    Problem solved!

  4. some guineas are like that just put tape all around the cage. Above the bottom. Do that and the tape will catch it. My piggie does it too...

  5. I think your situation definitely warrants you trying fleece & towels as a bedding! It's easier to clean, doesn't smell, is more comfortable for the guinea pig, and in the long run costs less. You can use any cheap towels & fleece you get at a flea market, and you just line the bottom of the cage with two layers of towels at the bottom & a layer of fleece at the top. They should be washed once a week, but there's no more purchasing a huge bag of bedding every month! My pigs absolutely adore fleece & towels, and now they wouldn't dream of being house on wood shavings. PLEASE don't take the previous comment of getting the guinea pig an exercise wheel, guinea pigs are not built for them and can easily break their backs or even die from an accident on the wheel. Exercise balls are even WORSE.  Your guinea pig is exercising properly now, by popcorning (the jumping & hopping around), and running around the cage. You have quite a happy little guinea pig!

  6. I have that problem with my guinea pig too and i just sweep it all up no more problem

  7. Yes, Eeny could of not said it any better!

A hand held vacuum is only like $15 at walmart. If you can't afford that..that kind of concerns me about how you would be able to pay any possible vet bills.

And THEY NEVER GROW OUT OF POPCORNING. Just thought that was really stupid advice, given by the person below me. My piggie at the age of 7 still popcorns. It just takes the proper care to keep them happy.

More bad advice: Using a plastic tub container. Guinea pigs need lots of ventilation, unlike other small rodents.

Have you herd of C&C cages? or www.guineapigcages.com

There are tons of guinea pig lovers and owners just like you who would be more than happy to answer any other questions you may have. Instead of asking anything off of here, try there instead..if you already havn't joined. :)

  8. It's called "popcorn" when they do that, and it shows that they're excited.

They usually only do this when they're young, then they grow out of it.

You might try putting a little less wood shavings in the cage, or use shredded newspaper that can't get between the bars.
