1) are gps problems for people with allergies? it's not me, but my dad has bad allergies, so if i keep some in my room, will he even notice any hair?

2) do gps like to be held, and just sit with you?

3) how often do they go to the bathroom? if i'm holding it for a few minutes, will it go on me? what's worse about that, males or females?

4) how bad do they smell?

thanks in advance! details will be appreciated!

  1. 1) your dad should be ok with guinea pigs as long as he is not near them for long periods of time, if there in your room he should be fine.

    2) the more you hold your guinea's the tamer they become, all guinea's like to be loved and have a bit of attention.

    3) they go to toilet all the time, if you have them out put them back every 5 minutes to go to toilet, usually if you have them on your knee (and there still) for a while you can tell when they want to go toilet coz they start to fidget this is usually the same for both males and females.

    4) they only smell if they are not cleaned out, this should be done once a week, although males slightly smell more than the females

    hope this helps :)

  2. 1) One of my best friends is allergic to dogs and cats, but has a guinea pig and devotes most of her time to him. I don't know if your dad is the same way, but to be safe, he probably shouldn't hold your piggie.

    2) Most cavies are a little nervous at first, but eventually will love to be held and petted, although some still like to be chased around the cage when you go to pick them up. ;)

    3) Guinea pigs go to the bathroom a lot. I'm not sure which gender is worse with that, or even if one over the other is, but I don't think it makes a difference. (On a side note, if you're wondering what gender to get, I think a female is a bit of a better choice. Since piggies are herd animals and therefore almost need a cage mate, you'd probably end up getting two, if you can and want what's best for the piggie. The only reason I say females are better is because they are easier to introduce to each other, and males tend to be a bit more territorial, although you can keep two together.) Anyway, as a general guideline, at least at first, you probably shouldn't hold them for more than ten to fifteen minutes, and should have a towel underneath.

    4) Guinea pigs themselves don't smell, but if you don't "spot clean" the cage at least every other night and don't fully clean it every week, the cage is bound to start smelling.

    I hope I helped!

  3. 1. You should get a short haired guinea pig.. I have 4 short haired guinea pigs in my house in a room where my dad goes in there the most and he has really bad allergies and none of his allgergies have acted up yet

    2. Yes, they love to be cuddled and to be petted... sometimes they even pur when you pet them! Its so cute

    3. It depends.. I cuddle with my guinea pigs almost everyday for 10-20 minutes and they never p**p or pee, but just to make sure you can put a towel on your lap so the guinea pig will p**p on the towel

    4. They dont smell at all if you do weekly cage cleanings

    5. Nothings really different all guinea pigs have different personalities.. but males are known to be more agressive and females more skittish

  4. 1) If he is in another room then he'll ok and he could probably last a few minutes in the room with the guinea pig in it (my moms VERY allergic to rodents, cats, and dogs but she lasted like 5 minutes before the sneezing started)

    2) Um... MY guinea pig didn't like being picked up a lot (but the other guinea pigs beat him up and he stayed in a house full of cats for 2 days... so he was sorta weird, but he had an excuse).  I'm sure any other guinea pig would be normal and it'd like to be pet and picked up.  Every time you pick it up that tames it and it makes it trust you a little more.

    3) They have to got to the bathroom ALL THE TIME, they'll probably start to squirm when they need to go back into their cage.

    4) They smell fine as long as you clean their cage EVERY WEEK.

    I hope this helps...

  5. 1). my brother has allergies too, and i have my guinea pigs in my room, and he's in the room next to mine, he's fine with it, just he doesn't come in my room that much anymore, but when he does it isn't THAT bad, unless he spends a long time in my room.

2). yes, my two guinea pigs are always out sitting with me on my lap or on my desk.

3). They c**p a lot, and most of the time, and "pee" quite a lot aswell. When i first had my guinea pigs, they used to pee on me when i held them for about 5 mins, but now they don't, and when i let them go, if they need to go, they'll hop back into their cage and go.  And i believe its the same with males and females.

4). I keep them in my room, but i leave the window open at all times. and the smell is fine, as long as you clean their cage once a week.

good luck if you decide to get one, they're really cute, and are very social.. (they'll want a friend or two).

    ..

i had a two females and two males, both have very strong personalties, i don't know which one i'd say had the most "obvious" personality, but they're all cute.

  6. 1) I am allergic to my guinea pig and all that happens is i get little bumps on wherever I was holding her and they itch really bad. As long as your dad doesn't hold the gp you should be fine because gp don't have a stink to them so it may be impossible for him to spell them in the air

2)After the gp gets to know you they will LOVE just sitting there with you. Especially when they get a little older and their ''craxy-ness'' calms down they will not be very active and just sit there with you

3)For the first could of weeks they probably will go on you or the surface they are on but once they get used to you and their surroundings they will learn to only go in their cage no matter how long they are out of it. I don't think it would matter if it s a girl or boy who does this but i do know that boys have less of a bladder control which means they cant hold it in as long as the girls can.

    4) My gp does not smell, but after her cage gets dirty and stays like that for a wile then it wont smell pretty anymore. But after you clean her cage you wouldn't even notice a animal is in the room. If you start to notice that you left the gp in the stinky cager for 2 long and the gp starts to smell then if you go to any pet store they carry sprays that you can spray your gp and she will smell nicer.

    HOPE THIS HELPS,

    -Amanda
