  1. Females tend to smell less, but any guinea pig will stink if you don't clean the cage at least once a week. Cleaned properly, you won't get a very strong odor. As with any rodent, there is some smell present but it's very mild with guinea pigs.

If your cage is not large enough to house two guinea pigs, it's not large enough for one. They need 7.5 square feet of space. Yes, your guinea pig will still get very lonely without a cagemate. When you're at school it will be very unhappy. You most certainly do need to get a pair of them.

Why not build a cheap, easy cage that is properly sized for guinea pigs? Check out http://www.cavycages.com

  2. Guinea pigs have no "natural" odor. Meaning, their bodies and fur do not smell. If there is any odor associated with a guinea pig, it is the cage. The cages need to be cleaned regularly, with spot cleaning done in between full cage cleanings.

Please do not get a guinea pig unless you plan to get two. It is not fair to the piggie. They are happiest and healthiest when housed in pairs or larger groups.

  3. I have had two guinea pigs and yes there cage will smell a little no matter how much you clean it because their pee is strong. They do not however smell as strong as a rabbit would. I wouldn't be so concerned with the smell so much a that they making a squeaking noise A LOT. Especially at night. Do not keep the cage in your room. Guinea pig also do not like being held so much as they are naturally skittish creatures. I am not trying to discourage you from getting one, but I would like you to make a well informed decision. Your guinea pig will definitely not get lonely because they are more solitary animals. Guinea pigs can live for seven, eight years. This isn't something you should jump into lightly. Hope I helped!

  4. depands if she use to be with other guinea pigs or not and their cean animals

  5. No, they don't smell. You have to make sure to clean it atleast once every week or every two weeks, depending on how much she poops and pees. I put baking soda on the bottom of the cage before I put in the bedding, to keep it smelling good for days. She won't get lonely as long as she's around people all the time, and you play with her for 15-30 minutes a day, twice a day is even better, good luck with your piggy!

  6. guinea pigs do stink if their cage is not cleaned everyday. it gets very dirty very quickly and cleaning it is a frustrating task. if you plan to only have one guinea pig you will need to spend at least 2 hours a day with it everyday.

  7. It doesn't matter if the cage is only big enough for one, get a bigger one. Guinea pigs should never be kept alone. In the wild guinea pigs live in herds, and are very social creatures, a human relationship will not and cannot replace the bond between two cavies. Cavy Spirit puts it like this:

'Imagine being abandoned on another planet with no other human to see or talk to. Just some giant alien creature who tries to kindly interact with you every so often. Well, for some us, that would be cool and fun. But for most of us, wouldn't it be nicer to have someone to share your life with? That's what it means to be a social animal.'

A lone guinea pig may go of its food, become depressed and die, it has happened. Humans are not the same as company of their own species. Plus with getting one you miss out on so much. When you have two guinea pigs, you have the pleasure of watching them play together, snuggle up together and they are so much happier and more vocal. I have kept two boars together and I have kept a boar on his own and I can tell you, they are definately happier in pairs, you can see it.

Get a bigger cage, or get a hamster or something that wouldn;t mind living alone. Also a guinea pigs digestive system is designed to have a conatsnt flow of food going through it, this means they are constantly eating, and so contsantly pooping. Which means that if you don't clean out the cage regularly yeah they will smell. Also, boars wee more than sows, well my boar does anyway lol, and its the wee that smells that not the p**p. So soiled bedding needs to be removed every 2-3 days and replaced. The cage needs to be full-on cleaned atleast once a week. So no guinea pigs themselved do not smell, but soiled bedding does. If you do plan on getting guinea pigs i would recommed using carefresh as it has odour control and is very absorbant.

This is a site that will give you more info on keeping cavies in pairs and singly, and some other sites that I think you will find useful:
