  1. they eat pellets and celery.  they like to live in small dark shoebox- like houses (but they like to chew them up).  for their cage , it has to be kinda big like 2 1/2 feet by 1 1/2 ft.  they should rarely or never go to any vet if it is healthy.  they need you to trim their nails on occasion but u can do that.  they need stuff to chew so their teeth dont get too long.  they have to be bathed every month at least in your sink.  they are timid and might bite if not handled correctly.

  2. Guinea Pigs are awesome. You will need:

    - A nice cage, say two feet wide and thee feet long

    - Bedding material: Pet stores carry special sawdust and other materials just for this purpose

    - A water bottle

    - A food dish and food formulated for guniea pigs

    - Nail trimmers to trim its claws if they become too long

    - A little "Igloo" for inside the cage: They like to have a place to hide

    - A good book on proper care

Take it to the vet a few weeks after you get it to have it checked out for any problems. After that, it probably won't need any visits unless it gets sick.

  3. It would probably be best to get two of the SAME s*x for their greatest happiness  Guinea pigs are quite skittish and will enjoy being in your lap for petting and combing.

They need proper food especially designed for their needs.  Other than that they should have fresh food - lettuce, spinach, parsley, cilantro, basil, chard, kale, etc.  The amount is about equivalent to the size of their head once a day.

Small nubs of carrot three or four times a week.  So give them a lot of variety to hit all their nutritional needs over a week's time.

They need a spacious cage so they can move about and they love little tubes and such to hide out in.  Small cardboard boxes or many plastic shelters available in pet stores.

They need a bedding for the bottom of the cage to catch urine and f***s and that should be changed daily.

  4. I used to breed guinea pigs. They are kind of expensive when you first get them because you have to get all of the necessary supplies. Obviosuly your guinea pig will need

*a cage and *bedding. It also needs *a place to hide, you can find igloo type hiding places at the petstore that are made specificly for guinea pigs. He/she needs *a food dish and *a water bottle. Along with the water bottle you should get *liquid vitamin supplements that you put in once a week or so, the directions should be on the back. Guinea pigs should eat the *food they make for guinea pigs at the pet store.. *pellets and *alfalfa or *hay. Another good investment is the *excersise ball so that your guinea pig can run around the house without getting lost and get some good excersise.

To ensure your guinea pig is happy make sure he/she is held a lot in the beginning so that he/she gets used to being handled and isn't startled by you. Guinea pigs can be very skittish and become frightened easily. When I say you need to get bedding, you need to get the "carefresh" brand..pine and cedar bedding is very bad for your guinea pig.

Vet visits is another great topic. When you first get your guinea pig is a great time to bring him or her in for a checkup. Don't forget you need to trim your guinea pigs nails! Their nails curl when they grow and if they become too long it is extremely uncomfortable. Also they need something to chew on to keep their teeth from growing too long, chew sticks or salt blocks are great for this. Don't forget that guinea pigs love veggies!! Carrots and lettuce are great, but iceberg lettuce is terrible for not only people but your guinea pig too.

  5. In addition to what's been said about them liking an assortment of fruits and vegetables in here, note that they need about 1/3 as much vitamin C as a person does, even if they are only ~2% the weight of a person. They do not make any. All other animals except humans and guinea pigs make adequate vitamin C.

Include some fruit in their diet. Some citrus, some apples, pears, cherries, etc, etc. Do not give them tropical fruits such as bananas and pineapples though.

Be SURE when giving them anything that it has NO component of any animal product - no butter, no yogurt, no milk... they are herbivores, and giving them animal products is very bad for them, and may even kill them.

Also, you might want to get them a second water bottle, and "treat" your guinea pig(s) with juice sometimes. About any sort of unfermented juice will do, and they LOVE cranberry juice. Fruits and juices, as well as raw vegetables contribute to their intake of Vitamin C.

Also, they love timothy hay. You can buy it in pet stores, OR I'm growing a small patch of it in a corner of my garden. The fresh timothy hay is a HUGE hit with my guinea pig.

They'll be happier if you can get 2 guinea pigs of the same s*x. They're hard to s*x though, and can get pregnant or impregnate a female before you can be SURE what gender they are. Be careful when introducing them. They may fight at first, but may get along later. Or, some combinations do not work. If you can find two who are already bonded together, that would probably be the best.

Guinea pigs are very good at hiding it when they are sick, until they are nearly at the point of death. Fortunately, this is seldom and they will live about 5 or maybe as long as 9 (rare) if you take care of them. Get a good book on how to take care of your guinea pig.
