My Female Guinea Pig Is Losing Hair.

Could She Just Be Shedding?

But Its Winter?

Or Is There Any Other Symptoms? I Should Look Out For To Mean Something Else?

EXTRA INFO -

Shes Only About 5Months Old.

Shes NOT A Long Haired One!

She Does Scratch A Bit, But She Always Have

But I Wash Her With Special Anti Mites/Fleas Shampoo And A Conditioner That Smooths And Relieves Her Skin

But Ive always Used It, Since She Was Born. And Shes Never Lost Hair Before?

Is This Normal. Just Shedding In Winter ?

  1. Animals do not shed their coats during the winter months.

If she is losing patches of hair, this could be a symptom of mites. Mites are microscopic & cannot be seen with the naked eye. Treatment with Ivermectin or Revolution is the answer. Do not use over the counter products, as these can be toxic for guinea pigs.

Ditto the anti-mite/flea shampoos. Some ingredients in these over the counter medicated shampoos and sprays can make your piggie very ill. Stop using this at once, unless you're doing so under the direction of a qualified exotics vet. Guinea pigs do not need to be bathed unless their dirty.

  2. maybe she's shedding take her to the vet

  3. That is not normal and the sprays and shampoos you find in the pet store are useless and can hurt more than help.

    Your pig likely has mites.

  4. As the days and nights are getting colder, remember to look after your pets as well. Make sure that they are kept warm and that their water bottle doesn't freeze but ensure they have a fresh air supply as well.

if she doesnt get better in a few days it wouldnt hurt to take her to a vet

  5. go to the vet

  6. I'm not really sure if this is normal or not.  You may be washing her too much?... I would call the vet and ask them I'm sure they can help.

  7. Sometimes they can develop allergic reactions if the chemical is used too much. And no matter what it says, pretty much all "anti-bug" washes still dry out the skin. Is it like chunks of hair, or just more shedding that usual, or...? Also, is it in a certain area, or all over?

  8. Sarah take her to the Doctors. There might be something wrong you know nothing about. Mine quit eating and started to lose hair and got real skinny. Come to find out she had impacted molars and would have had to cut both her jaws open to pull them out. She's in heaven now,but I'll never forget her. I never knew that they even had molars. So it might be something totally different then what you think. Take her to the vet dear. Hope she gets well,Bye
