hello!! i adopted 2 guinea pigs last month. I was told they were two males. but when i woke up this morning i found 4 babies!! sadly only 2 of them made it. i guess my question is do you know if its normal for mom to still be bleeding?? bleeding is really small but im kind of worried about it. she gave birth i think sometime in the middle of the night i guess ... but i just came home from work (6:00pm) and i still notice some blood. Should i be concerned?? they have an appointment with the vet in two weeks but im wondering if i should take them in sooner. thanks so much

  1. Ditto to what Justified said.

  2. The slight bleeding is very normal and no cause for alarm. It will stop completely within 24 hours. Give her a baby carrot to help stop the bleeding.

I think your biggest issue at this point is making sure the other piggie is, in fact, a male!!! Your sow will be fertile within AN HOUR or so after birth, so if the other piggie is a male, you need to remove him ASAP. Backbreeding your sow can kill her. Here are some sexing pictures that will help. Also, after age 4-5 months, the testicles on the boar will be very obvious.

The pups will begin eating pellets & hay by tomorrow. Make sure they have access to the food and the water bottle is lowered enough that they can reach it. They will need to nurse from the mum for 3 weeks. At that time, if you have any male pups, they will need to be separated from the mum and/or sister (if the other pup is a girl). The boars are fertile at 21 days old and sows at 28 days old.

Best of luck. Enjoy your baby piggies!

  3. TAKE HER IN NOW!!!! It means that there may still be a baby in there and that the umbilical cord is wrapped around it. She may need a c-section...

So sorry for the loss of the two little babies.

  4. honestly i would take your pet to the vet, just to be on the safe side. you never know.

  5. Have you tried wiping away the blood to see if it's just from the actual birth?

Is she shows signs that it's a constant flow of blood you may want to take her to the vet. Small animals do not scab as fast as we do. I recommend you invest in some styptic powder.
