Question:

Guinea pig ears?

My guinea pig's ears are crusty like. They've been like this since like February but wasnt too bad. I'd clean them out every other day and she was fine. Now even after cleaning them out every other day, they just seem to get worse. They just flake off and go into her ears..the one ear is worse than the other. Its just like a dry, whiteish flake..some times theres a darkish wax like substance also.

It doesnt seem to bother her any..she'll occasionally shake her head a bit.

I've been reading online about what it could be but the only thing I could come up with is mites or an infection. But if that was the case my other 8 piggies would more than likely have it also.

Any ideas of what it could be or anything?

I called and made a vet appointment..they couldnt get her in until next week though.

  1. I am not sure my guinea pig's ears are the same way but they don't look like mites and doesn't bother him, I geuss it is just like dry flakey skin

  2. That's good you made a vet appointment .. it sounds alot like Ear Mites. If she's lasted this long, and doesn't seem to be in pain, I don't think it will be too bad if you have to wait until next week. =)

  3. maybe you shouldnt clean them out as much as you do.. the wax is in her ear to protect it and you keep cleaning it away so her ears are producing more to keep up with the cleaning away.. you've prolly just upset them a bit.

my pig has dry skin on his ears just a little bit tho. you can get creams and stuff from the pet shop. dont put anything inside their ears tho unless the vet has instructed you to do so. you can damage the inside if you go probing around.

maybe better to get her checked over by the vet to be honest...
