I mean, I've seen that guinea pigs can have dandruff but I think she may have too much. I looked at her and there wasn't a square centimeter where you couldn't find dandruff. Are there any any products to get rid of this like shampoos or anything??

Thanks

  1. It sounds like mites or mange. My brother's guinea pig was shedding a lot, and had a lot of dandruff. A few weeks later, his hair started falling out in clumps and he eventually died from it. Keep an eye on the situation and maybe research other symptoms so you can be sure that you can catch it as early as possibly if it is something serious.

  2. Hmmmm try going to your local pet store and ask

  3. Although there have been guinea pigs with dry skin, it's not likely that is the problem. If she is a Teddy guinea pig dry skin is something I would look into, but otherwise the likely culprit is mites.

We thought our guinea pigs had dandruff for a while, and that was why they were itching. Turns out they had mange mites, a microscopic parasite that you cannot see with your naked eye. They are deadly if left untreated, and the most common ailment in guinea pigs by far. Most guinea pigs purchased from a petstore have mites, and they are very easy to treat. Get her to a reputable exotics vet and have her treated with either Ivermectin or Revolution. A decent vet will see the 'dandruff' and know they don't need to do any tests, just treatment. Good luck, I know they are a hassle but your guinea pig will feel so much better!

  4. We fostered a guinea pig for a while and she had bad dandruff. The vet said to bathe her with Cetaphil shampoo(Yes, the one for humans). A generic version will work too. Just be careful not to get it in her eyes.

  5. my guinea pig had that problem before..

we still don't know what it is

we have sprayed mites and lice lotion on it and it's cage we also have a special spray called Vetex skin lotion with tea tree lotion..

    try it for your self

  6. This could well be a Fungal infection,   Fungal infections usually start off with a bit of dandruff on your piggy's skin.  When you gently tug the hair, it will come out and have flaky skin on the end.  Neem shampoos will help if caught early but by the sound of it (what ever this is) you will need to seek veterinary help.  Fungal spores from the infection can make your piggy very poorly.

Mites are different you may see little bumps on your piggys skin and the hair around the area will be thinning and break off easily, piggy will  scratch constantly and may make themselves sore and may even bite themselves.  Some times with mite infestations a fungal problem as above can be present too.  Mites have to be treat by a vet and if left can kill a piggy.
