Guinea pig help.?

Question

how many times a day do you feed your guinea pig and what do you feed it. can you give them just vegies or fruit or do you have to by food like pellets for them but i dont know how much, what and when to feed them.

I know when I buy my rat food and I know it says on bags of a hampster food the quantity. Look on the back of the bag and read down it it should say.

Guinea pigs need unlimited timothy hay. They should never be without hay. They will also need 1/4 cup of plain pellets (oxbow or kleemama's are the best). Pigs also need at least a cup of fresh veggies per day. Scraps are not ok. Good veggies include dark leaf lettuces (romain, green leaf, red leaf... NOT iceberg), cilantro, parsley, bell peppers, kale and the occasional carrot or fruit.

I split the feedings into 2 a day. One in the morning and one at night.

I feed mine three times a day, and give them about 1/3 a cup each time. Mine eat as much as you give them and are not picky. Others will stop eating when they are full, and you can give them their full amount all at once and not worry about set meal times. You do need to buy pellets besides fresh veggies. If you want the pellets to last longer, mix about a cup of oatmeal in with the pellets, guinea pigs love oatmeal and it is good for them. Guinea pigs do love fresh greens though, yu can give them greens and not as many pellets if you want, but it is more work. Some greens that my piggies like are: Dandelion, all fruits except oranges, peas and pea pods, carrots, grass, berries (I know they are fruit), fruit and berry leaves, and tomothy hay. Do not feed them potato or broccoli! Oh, if they want more, the will tell you loudly! :)

They need a constant supply of grassy hay like timothy, orchard grass, or bluegrass.  This is the most important part of the diet and the hay must always be available.

A small amount of a high quality pellet should be provided in a limited amount.  For many guinea pigs it works out to about 1/4 cup but it does vary by pig.

Leafy greens and other veggies and fruits should be given daily.  I only feed veggies once a day but many people feed a few times a day.  At least one cup of veggies per guinea pig should be provided.  As people have said guinea pigs need good quality leafy greens like lettuces, kale, parsley, and cilantro.  Great diet ideas here:

Give them unlimited amounts of Timothy hay and timothy hay- based food pellets. Then give them fresh veggies like romaine lettuce, parsley, carrot tops, mustard greens, cilantro, broccili, carrots, etc. and occasional fruits like bell peppers, melons, apples, oranges, kiwi, guava, and others. Just only give veggies in small amounts daily and only give fruits in very small amounts occasionaly.

They are not 'easy' pets who should be fed any pellet and 'scrap' veggies, that's ridiculous. For proper nutrition they need constant timothy hay or else their digestive system will shut down.

They need a balanced diet full of vegetables daily. NO iceberg lettuce, it gives them diarrhea. Also, fruit should not be fed more than once or twice a week, it's too high in fat and sugars. Great daily veggies are just one baby carrot(a favorite, but not too healthy), red bell pepper, dark leafy greens, cilantro, romaine lettuce, and parsley.

Guinea pigs are easy. Buy the pellets and throw in the scrap veggies and fruits from dinner. As long as you feed them at the same everyday you should be fine!
