Question:

Guinea pig home remedies?

Okay first of all, I am looking for a professional...or knowledgeable opinion...no guesses please, no opinions based on hypothetical. Those type of answers can kill.

--------------------------------------...

I have no dire need of an answer..just researching alternative medicine.

i am curious if anyone knows of safe, highly effective, and pleasant home remedies for the following guinea pig ailments:

-mites

-urinary tract infections

--------------------------------------...

And i shouldn't have to say this but- YES vets are the best way to heal a pet...it is important to go to those, better to always be safe then sorry. However, what is the point of ranting about someone not going to a vet when they are posting on animal advice forums? typically, if they went to a vet they would not have posted at all. and if they havent and they arent going to...then whats the point of ranting? Lets kindly advise them to see a vet, and then give them some knowledgeable tips that are safe and effective. I for one would rather help the pet to the best of my abilties of a person who stubbornly refuses vet care, then complain about that person. Providing some amount of care is better then nothing and we all know some people just wont see a vet. So calm down and think about the pet first.

also, if i get a response to this question...and you a reading this after the question was answered...and are in need of care for your guinea pig for mites and/or UTI please see a vet. alternative medicine is alternative for a reason.

  1. You can treat for mites with ivermectin which you can buy over the counter but you must take your guinea pig to a vet for UTI. She will need antibiotics and you cannot get that without a presctiption.

Also you need a urinalysis and I'd get an x ray to rule out bladder stones. The symptoms can be similiar.

  2. Well all I can say is, if you dont have money to go to a vet or are to cheap to, please surrender it to a local shelter or humane society where it will get proper treatment.

This is supposed to be one of the best sites.

However, the thing you have to understand about guinea pigs is that they are very good at concealing signs of illness.  By the time a piggy starts to show symptoms, there's not a moment to lose!
