Question:

Guinea pig problems!?

We have 2 baby guinea pigs, both male, but one of them keeps repeatedly mounting the other, in the way an animal would mate. We checked they were both male, which they are, but cant understand why the other keeps sitting on him. We thought it might be him protecting his friend, but the one being sat on runs away sometimes and gets a bit annoyed by it.

  1. It's just dominace.

It's the other guinea pig saying 'I am above you; I am the leader'.

You need to keep an eye on this; male guinea pigs sometimes disolve into full fighting.

But if all they're doing is 'humping', this isn't a problem as it's just one of them asserting their domimance, and yes, the other guinea pig may get annoyed by it, but as long as there's not bloodshed, there isn't a problem.

  2. That's totally fine! It's just to show dominance. The one on top is showing that he's, like, the alpha. My dudes did that for a while. Don't worry about it!

  3. It is a dominance thing! I had two males who used to do that. Just moniter them and make sure they don't fight.... if they start chattering their teeth seperate them for a little bit.

  4. That's perfectly normal! He really is mounting his male cagemate! It's actually one way that they settle dominance, the dominant guinea pig repeatedly mounts the other one. This may go away in a few days or weeks, but sometimes if the guinea pig is full of testosterone during puberty it will go on for months. This usually clears up by the time the guinea pig is around a year old, but I have one boy who is about a year & a half and still constantly mounts his poor cagemate! Yes, it is annoying to the other guinea pig, but it's perfectly harmless.
