hi there

my guinea pig gave birth this morning to 5 babies, 3 alive and 2 asleep!

She finished giving birth about 11.30am (UK) and now she has pulled out a lot of hair on her back/bottom and its all red and weeping/bleeding i phoned the vet and i have to take in her at 9.30am tomorrow. Why is she doing this, she is really going mad biting herself, no squeeling or anything but she is worrying me! Is is stress?

She has tripled her wound in the last hour or so??

please answer

  1. It's a stress related thing, some pigs do it for every litter, some just the first time.

She will be ok, just gently bathe the area then put on some antiseptic cream/powder and take her to get checked out tomorrow.

You will probably find that by the morning she has settled and it won't look so bad.

  2. She is probably just lining her nest.  Lots of animals pull their hair out to line a nest for their babies.

  3. ok she is stressed out! they sometimes will do that. its probably because of such a big litter that she had!

oh and guinea pigs dont make nests to have their puppies in. (puppies are baby guinea pigs). your thinking of rabbits. they make nests.

and no she isnt eating her fur she is stressed.

also guineas will sometimes chew out their fur becuse of bordem. does she have fresh hay provided? if not get some its good for the puppies!

    hope this helps!

good luck tomoro at the vet!

  4. dont worry its common

  5. this is just stress, everyone of my guinea pigs did this after giving birth to 3 or more babies, they will pull their hair out all day, i only would take them to the vet if they carry on doing this the next day, theres nothing really they can do and you will be incuring costs, just put cream on, dosnt really stop them but helps it being less sore for them, their hair grows back within 2 weeks

  6. when my guinea-pig gave brith, she did this two. we put some bedding in for her and she stopped, she's pulling her fir out for the babys

also :) you will be able to hold the babys in 2 days time :)
