Question:

Guinea piggie cage for baby's?

I'm getting 2 baby guinea pigs in about 4 or 5 weeks. They haven't been born yet. I'm going to get first pick on which two pigs I want. I've never owned a guinea pig before but have done a lot of research. We're going to build our own Cubes and Coroplast cage. 13 sq feet. It says on the website that that size is for 4 pigs, but I want my pigs to have as much space as possible.

Anywho, do we have to do anything special to the cage for the baby's? We're going to have the coroplast sides and everything but do I need anything else?

  1. The more room, the better.  Don't put tunnels in the cage..they tend to get stuck inside them aas they grow.  And don't use cedar wood chips, just plain wood chips.  The cedar will affecr their lungs and kill them.  They love to run around the house too.  FUN!!  Once they get larger....HUGS!!

They get attached to you, will play with you and come to you and give you kisses

  2. Nope, that sounds perfect! The more room the better for sure! It's spectacular that you've done research ahead of time, most people waste money on tiny pet store cages before realizing a C&C is so much better!

Tunnels are my guinea pigs favorite toys. They are uninterested if they cannot sleep in it, chew on it, or run through it!

Consider fleece and towels instead of pine or aspen. They're definitely fine to use, but a lot of people do prefer two layers of towels under a polyester fleece blanket. I find it's more comfortable, smells less, looks nicer, is easier to clean, and is in the end much cheaper. But it's really a personal choice.

Make sure you adopt! You sound like you've done a lot of research so I assume you'd know about the dangers of breeders and pet stores. There are SO many homeless guinea pigs out there in rescues and shelters! My pet store boys came with mites, lice, AND one died of a URI. Don't fall for it. Our rescue pigs have all come perfectly healthy. Opt to adopt!

Good luck! Guinea pigs are spectacular pets! Make sure they gets lots of laptime, floortime, and proper food. Oxbow rules.
