Question:

Guinea pigs: Can you make a cage 3x3 rather than 4x2, or 3x2?

I recently read about making guinea pig cages at guineapigcages.com. I have a dog, so I would like to dog proof it, but I want to make it the maximum space of my table. The site only lists 3x2 and 4x2, so what about 3x3?

Thank you to all answers!

  1. Yes - it is the floor space that is important.

You calculate floor space by multiplying the length by the width.

So a 2x4 c+c cage is 8 sq cubes of floor space.

A 3x3 is 9 sq cubes of floor space - so its actually slightly bigger.

  2. 3x3 should be just fine. That is a nicely sized cage, which can fit several guinea pigs. To dog proof it, you should probably put a lid on it. You can do this by going to Lowes or Home Depot and having them cut you a piece of closet maid shelving which fits onto the top of the cage.

I assume that this cage will be a Cubes and Coroplast one, the best cage for guinea pigs out there.

    Good luck on this.

  3. A 3x3 meets recommended sizes and that is similar to what I did with my girls in the beginning. They had a 6x5 instead of a 2x9.

  4. yes!

  5. No, I tried to make a 3x3 cage before and it was ok at first but after only a few days the cage blew up with my guinea pigs inside. They all died.

  6. sure! it's just that rectangular cages fit in better and take up less space, you know what i mean? as long as their's enough space for your piggy go ahead!

  7. The nice thing about C&C cages is that you can make them almost any dimension you desire.

When speaking of the numerical dimension, the numbers refer to the number of GRIDS, not necessarily feet. So 3x2 represents 3 grids by 2 grids, and not 3 feet by 2 feet.

    Each grid is about 14 inches in width---so a "3x2" cage would actually be 42 x 28 inches --- 3 1/2 feet x 2.3 feet --- 8.05 square feet.

Keep this difference in mind when looking at the area in which you want to put your cage.

Good for you for wanting the best for your piggie!
