Guinea pigs and wheels?

Question

Well i have a guinea pig and i was just curious.....like hamsters can guinea pigs run on wheels? If they can will my guinea pig enjoy it?

guinea pigs run on wheels and yes they LOVE it! my advice though is to cut down on sqeeky wheel noise and give them the ability to explore by buying them an exercise ball. just put the guinea in, set him down and let him go.

no, guinea pigs backs are arched like an upside-down 'U' the opposite of the wheel.... wheels and balls can serioulsy hurt theyre backs... this si why GP's need such large cages=]

Please don't put your guinea pig in a ball or on an exercise wheel.  Guinea pigs have rigid spines and cannot safely arch their back in the way that is required to run on a wheel.  They can be seriously injured if forced to use equipment like that.

A better way to get plenty of exercise for your guinea pig is to make sure that the cage provides tons of room.  Pet store cages are almost always too small and don't give enough space to run and play.  A C&C cage is huge, cheap and easy to clean.  You'd be amazed at how much happier your guinea pig is with a larger cage like these:

Also, you should consider adopting a same s*x friend for your guinea pig.  They are social animals and are happiest when they have company.  Great info on their social life here:

No, they are not meant to bend that way like hamsters. They can break their backs and die on them.

I'm not sure if they make them big enough for Guinea Pigs.

Don't give your guinea pig a rodent wheel to run in - though wheel manufacturers may claim the wheel is safe, your guinea pig's body is ill-suited for this kind of exercise.

A guinea pig's eyes are situated on the sides of his head instead of resting close together in front like human eyes. This means that guinea pigs have strong peripheral vision but may be bad at judging distances or heights. Since depth perception is a problem for guinea pigs, don't stack play items like bricks or branches more than nine inches off the ground. Your guinea pig may be able to climb a structure higher than that, but he will likely have problems getting down safely. A fall can mean broken bones or internal injuries that could prove fatal for your pet.

No! Please, if you care at all about your guinea pig you will NOT get it a wheel or ball. Hamsters can use it because their backs are meant to stretch and bend easy. Guinea Pig's spines are too fragile and it can injure their spine. All he really needs is an area to run around and some things to chew, maybe even a toilet paper roll? Trust me, I have a guinea pig and have read many books and listened to the people at the pet store. Just don't get him that. (I want your guinea pig to be happy and healthy as much as you! :-) )

no guinea pigs have delicate bones and r not agile like a hamster so if u put a guinea pig on wheels it won't enjoy it cause it will hurt itself

No, guinea pigs should never run on wheels. Their bodies weren't designed to run on wheels. They can't bend their backs like a hamster does while running on a wheel. Exercise balls aren't good either. Same reason why guinea pigs can't run on wheels.
