Question:

Guinea pigs won't eat fresh fruits and veggies?

my guinea pigs are now about 3 or 4 months old and i got them at 5 weeks. i've tried feeding them romaine lettuce, carrots, oranges, and grapes, and apples. i put small pieces of them in thier cages but they don't touch them at all. when i put them to thier noses they just turn thier heads and run away.

is there any way i can get them to eat these or get them to eat anything other in addition to pellets and hay?

they need some vitamin C in thier diet and the only thing that provides it is their pellets, and that's not enough.

one of my guinea pigs will eat about half of a baby carrot but the other one won't. and i've heard that carrots shouldn't be fed to them too often.

what other fruits or vegetables can i try?

or is there any way i can get them to eat them?

i noticed we have some strawberries, do you think i can try to get them to eat it?

should i pick off the seeds?

  1. just try alternating, by the way the fruits/veggies you are feeding them are not very good for them. Especially the fruits, only feed them small portions of fruit twice a week at the max. check this webpage out for veggies thar are good for them you just have to make sure the Ca:P (calcium to phosphorus) ratio is correct http://www.guinealynx.info/charts.html

  2. just keep trying thats all you can really do

as far as the strawberries go, just cut of the greens and wash em, the seeds are fine.

  3. There are Vitamin C drops that you can buy to put in their water bottles.  There are also Vitamin C chewables.  If you are feeding them high quality guinea pig pellets (not rabbit pellets) also, they should get enough Vitamin C.

It is not good to feed piggies to much fresh fruit and vegetables, as the piggies can get the runs.  Your instincts were right about strawberries.  The seeds can get stuck in their teeth and be very painful.  Carrots are a good source of Vitamin A, not Vitamin C.  Like humans, piggies have individual tastes.  Just keep trying different things.  Dark green veggies are usually good, but don't give them lots of spinach, because piggies can easily get kidney stones.  Please take the time to read up on proper guinea pig care.  There are many good websites out there.

  4. Not sure if they'll eat strawberries mine don't...they love brocolli, carrots, cabbage, glass house lettuce not iceberg, apples, sprouts, maybe they can't grip them as guineas don't use their paws when eating so make sure the pieces are big enough...if they still won't eat  veg, then i would consider pet vitamin drops from the pet shop put into their water bottle......good luck..any concerns have a word with your vet :D

from first having a guinea pig and a forum.

  5. Hmmm. . . Try some other leafy things. Do they like grass ? Try curly kale, maybe a spinach leaf each (not too often), celery (cut up really small), a little bit of cherry tomato, dandelion leaves, cucumber, mine love bell peppers too. Try a few of these things, every pig has their favourite =]

  6. They probably don't know it is food. Breeders and pet stores typically don't feed fresh foods.

Have you tried fresh grass if untreated or wheatgrass? It's like hay. You can try eating it in front of you then offering it to them. Or putting it in their mouth til they nibbly gently.

Try more leafy greens like green or red leaf lettuce, cilantro or parsley instead of fruits.

Usually the easiest method is to have another guinea pig show them to eat it.
