So, I have been playing guitar for 6 years. I am 100% Self-Taught, but I don't know how to read notes, just tabs.

I'm trying to start making my own solo's but I don't know any scales or how to solo with scales. Can someone help me out here?

  1. I can't read music either, but you can buy booklets with lsits of scales in them. You can probably find them online too. that's what I did.

  2. you should learn to read music it will be much easier

  3. I do not understand the question. Scales are used to teach you to recognize standard musical notation, the sound of notes and to build finger speed. Why can't you write the solos in TAB?

What do you mean by make your own solos? Do you want to learn to read standard notation?

Do you want some practice scales.

Also for guitar you will have to learn to read chord symbols for strumming chord grids. I really do not understand your question any basic guitar book will teach you to read standard notation and contain practice scales... are you looking to write music in standard notation?

Wow since you don't seem to know what you are talking about even a beginner (which I am not) could offer good advice -Don't be rude. This site is about discussion.

  4. sorry i just started guitar and i can only read tabs too i just go experiment with stuff and i found out really cool stuff.

  5. This book explains things well and you only need to know tab.

I learned reading standard notation and tab, but now I solely use tab.  There is less guess work - for me at least.  Then pick up the Guitar Grimoire series of books.  These are an endless treasure trove of scales and modes...then practice a lot.

  6. Music theory is what you need to know. Reading music is not neccessary to play and know scales. Anyways, the main scales are Major and Minor, and are just a progression. If you know what I'm about to ramble off, skip to the next section...

A half-step is one fret on the fretboard. A whole step is then two frets. All scales are just patterns of whole and half steps.

    W=Whole      H=Half

    Major Scale: W-W-H-W-W-W-H

    Minor Scale: W-H-W-W-H-W-W

    Soo...

E Major Scale starts on E then goes through the progression and looks like...

    E-|0-2-4-5-7-9-11-12|

    or...

    D|-----------------1-2|

    A|---------0-2-4-----|

    E|-0-2-4-------------|

    Minor is

    E|-0-2-3-5-7-8-10-12|

Also, notice that each scale ends on E as well, therefore the scale is cyclical and can be repeated on any E

For additional scales and techniques, pick up a book of scales, they usually have Tab in those books too.

    Hope this helps!!
