How can I make up (improvise) a rock guitar solo? I always use the pentatonic scale, but then it sounds too jazzy or bluesy. Help? Thanks!

  1. that's the way of thinking i had too.  but everyone and their mother's rockstars use the penatonic licks.  try some wider stetches.  Use some passing notes, like the blues scales, you'd add an Eflat to the E penatonic.  learn the aeolian scale, phrygian, and locrian, as well as dorian and the rest.  they're the same scales in different positions.  this will give you some notes that are seriously sinister.  once you get up to 120bpm it will start sounding more rock, less blues.  cyclical licks will sound very rockn'roll too.  mix the major and minor penatonic scales.
